A Plant Prescription for Healing: Moving through Trauma
*Before I start, I want to preface - this is not medical advice nor is what I am sharing intended to treat or cure any illness or disease. When necessary, seek medical attention and work with a healthcare professional.
Over the past few weeks, my family and I have been experiencing an overwhelming amount of trauma coming to the surface. We have all been doing the work over the last 6 years to process and move through a big one: the loss of a husband and father. Grief seems to come in waves but man, this last wave was so intense I thought it may take us down. So much anger, fear and helplessness. We’ve been feeling ALL the feelings, the highs and the lows and safely moving through each one.
On top of navigating through grief, we’ve also been experiencing a lot of other traumas coming to the surface. Traumas that haven’t even happened to us personally, but have been passed down through the family line. Generational traumas.
Then, navigating through my own childhood abuse trauma and all that goes along with that
It’s been a lot. Too much.
BUT GOD!
As I’ve been processing through the last month and everything that we’ve experienced, I have been documenting things that have helped us along the way.
I want to note, it is helpful to understand that the body/mind holds on to trauma, specifically the nervous system. The body keeps the score! When trauma is triggered, those same areas where the body/mind has held on for so long can easily be re-traumatized. Over time, the goal is to help the nervous system feel SAFE. There is no more danger or threat.
So, I’ve put together a collection of helpful tools for those who are working through current or past traumas or just needing some nervous system support. Of course, working with the plants is a big one!
This will be a series of posts in which I will go into each tool and provide details for why each tool can be useful.
Know that YOU ARE LOVED, YOU ARE STRONG, KEEP GOING!
