Fuel, fertilizer, and freight costs are affecting growers across the green industry, from production through delivery

In his State of the Industry presentation at Cultivate’26, Dr. Charlie Hall projected potential increases of approximately 10% for fuel and energy, 8% for fertilizer, and 6% for freight and trucking.

For tree growers, getting more trees on each truck is one way to help manage those costs. Commercial Smart Pots produce compact root balls that weigh less, take up less space, are easier to harvest, handle and ship.

Urban Forest Nursery, Inc. describes the difference they've experienced: “With compact rootballs, which both weigh less and take up less space, we are now able to pack many more trees onto a single semi for shipping to customers in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Alaska, and western parts of Canada.”

That means spreading the cost of a truckload across more trees, reducing the freight cost per tree.

A little twist on the Three Sisters garden 🌻🫘🌱

The traditional Three Sisters method brings corn, climbing beans, and squash together. Rooted in Indigenous agriculture in North America and practiced for centuries, it gives each crop a role: corn supports the beans, beans capture nitrogen with help from bacteria on their roots, and squash shades the soil to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.

This garden swaps corn for sunflowers as the climbing support for beans, all growing alongside squash in a Smart Pot Round Raised Bed Planter!

Have you tried a combination like this in your Smart Pot garden?

Who says hanging baskets are just for flowers?

Our friends at are giving their summer baskets a fresh start for fall with peas and Bright Lights Swiss chard planted in Smart Pot NoCoco Liners.

NoCoco Liners turn traditional wire hanging baskets into breathable fabric growing containers, giving gardeners an easy way to grow flowers, herbs, vegetables, and more without a traditional coco liner. In this case, they’re putting those baskets right back to work for a fall edible garden 🥬

And if you’re looking for a little more garden inspiration, join From Seed to Spoon LIVE right now on YouTube for their weekly gardening livestream!

Today they’re talking “Growing Fruit in Your Backyard with Josh Gardens” with special guest Josh Gardens

There’s nothing better than seeing a Smart Pot completely filled out with a healthy garden 🌱

Our friends at Sparetime Garden Center in Willits, California started this veggie garden with healthy starts picked right from their garden center and planted them into a 100-Gallon Smart Pot.

They kept everything healthy with the same fertilizers and garden products they offer their customers, and the results speak for themselves!

If you’re near Willits, stop in and let the team help you get your own Smart Pot garden started. 🌻

One of the highlights of the Farwest Show: National Nursery & Greenhouse Trade Show this year was getting to reconnect with our friend Phyllis Gricus, garden designer, speaker, writer, and principal of Landscape Design Studio.

While we were together in Portland, Phyllis told us about her latest article, “Planting Under Trees,” where she shares how she uses Smart Pots to grow small trees and shrubs beneath a mature red oak without disturbing its established root system.

As Phyllis explains, the breathable fabric naturally air-prunes roots, helping create a healthier, more compact root system. And 15 years later, her original fabric-potted plants are still going strong.

The Smart Pot Wall Flower Hanging Planter makes it easy to garden vertically when you’re short on room.

Hang it on a sturdy wall, fence, gate, or railing, add a good potting mix, and plant herbs, flowers, strawberries, pr peppers!

The breathable fabric helps excess water drain while air moves through the root zone, giving plants a root-friendly place to grow without using an inch of ground space.

What would you grow vertically?
