The block plane can be used one-handed to clean up endgrain, chamfer edges, or any number of other handy tasks. Available in a variety of configurations, it’s small, relatively inexpensive, and even kind of cute. But it’s definitely not a toy. Some people think it got it's name from it's used to clean up the endgrain of butcher blocks, but what do you think?

Another successful class this past Saturday. This class is the End Grain Basket Weave Cutting Board. This is a great class, and you get to take home a nice piece of what we like to call "Functional Art". Great job everyone! Wana Wood: Also known as Red Louro or Determa, Wana wood is a striking. It features a rich color palette ranging from pinkish-red to reddish-brown, with a medium to coarse texture and a generally straight or slightly interlocked grain. Wana wood is valued for its strength, durability, and resistance to decay, making it an excellent choice for both interior and exterior joinery, cabinetry, and furniture making.

Over the weekend, Dave taught a class where students learned to make an end table with tapered legs. These tables look awesome. If you’re interested in taking one of our classes, stop in the store or check out the website!

For a woodworking project that’s attractive, useful, and fun to build, it’s hard to beat this three-legged stool. Take these plans and make a few for yourself https://bit.ly/4b2kPnH

With its scooped, gently triangulated seat, tapered legs, turned stretchers, and flared stance, it can easily find a home in most rooms or shops. In fact, because one stool is rarely enough, this project provides a great opportunity to jig up for small-scale production.

These students wrapped up their five part Woodworking Fundamentals class today. During this intensive course, they received hands-on practice with a variety of hand tools and power tools as they crafted their Shaker End Tables, and learned traditional joinery including mortise-and-tenons, dados, and half-lap dovetails. They also were able to apply a couple coats of Half-and-Half finish from our friends at . Great job, guys!!!

Congrats to Todd, Mack, Kasi, and Jude for completing our Woodworking Fundamentals III class today! These folks have logged over 30 hours of class time learning the fundamentals of woodworking including: laying out projects and creating cut-lists; setting up power tools and using them safely; milling and dimensioning lumber; creating several types of joinery; and gluing up projects. Each student walked away with a cutting board, end table, and bookcase along with all kinds of tips and techniques.

Thank you for joining us for this series of classes!

Looking for cool tools for curved work? You'll want a spokeshave. You can learn all about them here https://bit.ly/3Vw5V2f

Spokeshaves are available in a multitude of configurations, including models with concave or convex blades and models dedicated to chamfering. However, unless you’re a chairmaker or have specialized needs, straight-bladed models will handle most common jobs.

Hammers and mallets are so Stone Age simple that they’re often taken for granted. But just try working without them sometime. The simplest woodworking chores–chiseling a mortise or tacking on a piece of trim–would be a real challenge, if not impossible.

While you might think that “a hammer is a hammer” (and the same thing for mallets), good reasons exist as to why these strikers are available in so many sizes and configurations.
