How to save money and reuse your potting soil. Expanded metal screen, with old hose around the sharp edges, placed over cart. Turn over last years pots, remove any weeds and look for slugs. Break up soil, and then rub the root/soil mass over the screen like a cheese grater. Toss the plant and roots into the yard debris bin. I use this mix in the bottom of the pot. There is still some nutrients available. You can also use this as an amendment to your flower beds. I do not use this on the vegetable garden as there is still active systemic insecticide in it.
