A lot of fulfillment in this work is caring for trees that might just live long past us.

This is my daughter standing by one of Utahs largest cottonwood trees. Trees are shade to our picnics, give little fairies places to play, and really are so much to what makes Utah beautiful.

🌳 + 💦 = A HOSE INSIDE A TREE?! 😳

Yep. You’re looking at a garden hose that this tree literally grew around.

I found this during a tree evaluation, and even I had to do a double take.

Trees are relentless growers. If something is left wrapped around a trunk or branch long enough, the tree doesn’t politely stop, it keeps growing around it.

That means things like:
🌲 Support stakes & ties
💡 Christmas lights
🪢 Ropes & straps
💦 And apparently… garden hoses 😂

As wild as this looks, it can become a serious problem. I’ve seen trees damaged and even girdled by things that were put on years earlier and simply forgotten.

Your reminder: check your trees. Remove anything that’s been left wrapped around them before the tree makes it permanent. 🌳

No, we didn’t cut into a water main! That’s a massive cottonwood tree removal under serious pressure.

Ever seen a tree “bleed” water like a hose? Here’s why it happens and why this tree had to come down:

1️⃣ Built-in Water Pumps: A mature cottonwood draws over 100 gallons of water daily. When you sever its trunk, that stored moisture rushes straight out.
2️⃣ Internal Pressure Cooker: Cottonwoods are prone to Bacterial Wetwood, where internal bacteria ferment sap, creating trapped gases up to 60 PSI!

Why cottonwoods aren’t great next to houses:

Short Lifespan: They grow fast and start rotting internally around 70–100 years.

Brittle Wood: Soft, water-heavy limbs drop unexpectedly in high wind or heavy snow.

Root Invasion: Aggressive roots seek out plumbing, septic lines, and driveways.
