Should I have started this project sooner? Probably. 🤣

But there’s just something about working outside in the crisp fall air, surrounded by changing leaves, that beats sweating through the late summer heat any day. 🍂

Prep work has officially begun for MORE peonies! Will we get them all in the ground before winter? Absolutely. Will I procrastinate a little longer because life is busy? Also absolutely. 😂

Slowly but surely, we’re making room for more perennial blooms at That Flower Stand on Forty-Eight! 💐

The last harvest of the season.

Tonight I cut what was left in the garden to make one very special Senior Night bouquet for tomorrow. And I think Mother Nature timed it just right.

Frost is near. You can feel it in those chilly mornings, and the garden is definitely telling me that another flower season has officially wrapped up.

But wrapped up doesn’t exactly mean done. 😂

There are still peonies waiting to be put in the ground, raised beds that desperately need to be cleaned out, and about 472 things I told myself I’d get to “when things slow down.”

Spoiler alert: things have not slowed down. 😂

Life is busy. The boys are busy. Hockey is hockeying. And somewhere in between all of it, I’m trying to tuck this little flower farm in for the winter and start dreaming about what will grow here next year.

There’s always something a little bittersweet about that final cut of the season. But getting to use the very last blooms for something as special as a Senior Night bouquet feels like a pretty perfect way to end it.

Until next year, flower season.

…now somebody remind me I still have peonies to plant. 😅

In honor of International Dot Day(9/15-ish), I sat down and read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds to the boys. I thought I was sharing a lesson with them about creativity, confidence, and being brave enough to try… But somewhere along the way, I realized the book was teaching me a lesson, too.

Sometimes, we become so focused on creating something perfect that we forget every beautiful thing starts with one small mark.

My flowers are such a reminder of that. Every garden begins with a tiny seed, a small sprout, or an idea planted during a season when you aren’t quite sure where it will lead. That Flower Stand on Forty-Eight began as my own little “dot”—something that helped me heal, gave me purpose, and slowly grew into more than I ever expected.

The garden isn’t perfect. Every flower doesn’t bloom the way I planned, and I’m constantly learning, changing, and pivoting. But maybe that’s the lesson: you don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. You just have to be willing to make your mark and see where it takes you.

I may have read the book to the boys, but I think this mama needed its message just as much. 🌱🌸

Plant the seed. Make your mark. Let yourself grow.

Tonight I read the boys Millie Fleur’s Poison Garden, and somewhere between its wonderfully strange plants and its message about celebrating what makes us different, I found myself thinking about my own garden.

I’ve never really wanted to grow exactly what everyone else is growing. Give me the unusual colors, the funny textures, the flowers with wild personalities and the plants people have to stop and ask about. It isn’t that the traditional things aren’t beautiful—I’ve just always been drawn to what feels a little unexpected.

My garden isn’t perfectly planned or carefully manicured. Sometimes the mint takes over, the flowers grow crooked, and something I planted on a whim becomes my favorite thing in the entire garden. But that’s the beauty of it. It reflects me.

Gardening has taught me that something doesn’t have to look like everything around it to be beautiful. Sometimes the most interesting things are the ones brave enough to grow a little differently.

And maybe that’s one of the reasons this book stayed with me after I closed it. I hope the boys grow up knowing that they don’t have to blend in, either. There is so much beauty in being curious, different, a little wild, a little weird—and completely yourself.

Kudos to Millie Fleur, her wonderfully peculiar poison garden, and all of us who were never meant to grow in perfectly straight rows. 🌿🖤

Crimson and clover…but give me pink dahlias, over and over. 🎶

Late-summer flowers might just be my favorite. This year, I hand-selected all the varieties I wanted to grow—and apparently, I was feeling every possible shade of pink. From soft blush to deep crimson, I’m completely obsessed.
Our peony subscribers also received a bonus late-summer bouquet with their 2026 subscription. When I dreamed up that little extra, my main goal was to showcase another one of our prized possessions here at the stand—the dahlias. Peonies may be the stars of spring, but dahlias are definitely the queens of late summer. 2026 peony subscription holders be on the look out for an email in the coming weeks. ☺️
