Today was a productive day! We pulled off most of the old 1970's charcoal Grey vinyl siding to reveal the wood siding beneath. Once we get the rest of the Grey siding off, we'll pressure wash the floor, walls, & ceiling of the porch to chip off any loose paint to start prepping for new paint. The walls of the porch will be the same lemon drop yellow as the front with white trim.

All of the vinyl siding on this house is in bad shape. It has become so brittle with age and there are areas where it is completely missing. The wood siding underneath has so much more character! It really IS coming along!

After over 2 years of work. The restored spindles & handrails are back in place. We have a LOT to do to finish the porch, but these were by far the most tedious & complicated of what we expect to have to do for the porch. Russ also replaced all of the rotten floorboards as well as some rotten floor joists. It would have been a lot cheaper & quicker if we would have replaced it with new, but we never do things the cheap, easy way. đŸ˜† There's just something about having the original 1890 pieces live on!

The butler's pantry! Where do I begin? We started on this room right after we bought the house. The Macys had used this room as a breakfast room. I believe it was converted from a traditional butler's pantry to a breakfast room in the later 1920's by CY & Laura Andrews when they lived here. We found an old newspaper in the wall from that time that had lots of ads for breakfast rooms stating that they were the new fashion.

I stripped the wall of cabinets on the southeast wall fairly soon after we bought the house. Under multiple layers & colors of paint was this gorgeous wood! Later, we were gifted the pass through cabinet by Derek Rushforth. It fit perfectly where the old shadow lines were that indicated there had previously been a cabinet in that spot. Another year later, David & Kelly Makin passed on 4 old cabinet doors from a built-in cabinet David had to remove in a home he was remodeling on N Fremont St. Russ was able to build a cabinet to fit those doors where I always wanted a sink. I even ordered the hammered copper sink & reproduction period wall faucet back then--maybe 4 years ago.

We had the plaster repaired & drywall done where the plaster was missing at least 3 years ago by Finishing Touches. The beautiful oak trim was coated with layers upon layers of paint i stripped. The baseboard in this room was mostly pine, so we replaced it with salvaged oak baseboard from the house that was torn down where the Hometown Federal Credit Union drive through is on E Ewing St. The baseboard cap piece was salvaged from the old apartment house that was torn down between the old Anglican Church (34 West Main) & Norris Insurance. Russ put up most of the trim early this year--later winter/early spring.

I picked out the wallpaper & tile last year. Anita Schetzsle helped me order the wallpaper in February of 2025 at Sherwin Williams here in Peru. It sat in its boxes until this Spring. There's nothing like a cancer diagnosis to kick you in gear to finally get things finished! I tried so hard to get it done before my surgery June 3rd, but it didn't happen. We laid the tile first & finished the wallpaper a few days before the surgery.

I've been very limited on what I could do, but my wonderful husband picked up the pieces and even did some of the pretty stuff! The backsplash is made from 2 old tin ceiling tiles I salvaged. Those tiles came out of the building between Hard Times bar & the Nickel Plate Saloon. I got those in the later 1990's & have held onto them all these years. Russ is the one who did the decorative painting on them . (That is normally my job!) He even helped with the decorating. The decorating still isn't finished yet, but it will get there. I used a white refrigerator because we already had it. It will do for now, but someday I'd like a black one. I will place a microwave on the middle shelf of the cart. We're using the microwave in our kitchen right now, so it will have to wait. Our goal is to eventually turn the home into a bed & breakfast. This butler's pantry will be accessible by guests to use for refreshments, etc.

We had to buy grout & adhesive for the tile, upholstery tacks for the tin backsplash, & the little wooden wall vessels that hold coffee condiments. Almost everything else I've had stockpiled too long. We still need to replace the windows & put the trim up around them (we have the trim). New windows will be ordered maybe next year when our finances are back where they should be from all these medical bills.

We've been working on the butler's pantry lately. The trim has all been stripped of its paint. This doorway went to a 1/2 bath when we bought the house. We decided to make it into a pantry closet. It is still empty inside, but we'll be installing antique reclaimed cabinets & shelving soon.

According to the plans for this house, this would have been an open hallway to the downstairs bedroom on Hood St. It was converted to a walk in closet off the bedroom & a half bathroom off the butler's pantry sometime before we bought the house. The doorway that was placed on this hallway conversion was the original exterior door for the living room that was replaced in the living room by a window at some point. We want to reinstate it as an exterior door in its rightful place in the future. So...we had to put a different door in its place. This door was in the apartment of the house when we bought the home. There was a room on the south side of the apartment that had 2 doors. This was one of those doors. It had the antique florentine glass in it originally. It is a short door (77") & all the other doors in the butler's pantry are all 96" tall. We had this window with florentine glass that came from the church that was torn down on the southeast corner of E 5th & N Benton Streets. It worked out perfectly to fill in the space to allow us to keep the full height of the trim. I'm loving it!

They always say that if life throws you lemons, make lemonade! Our boiler has been broken since having a power surge last Sunday during the storm. It fried the circuit board, monitor, & inducer motor. While we wait for the parts, we are relying on electric & kerosene heaters on cold days. That means that our radiators aren't scorching hot. It's a perfect opportunity to paint them. I got the one in the butler's pantry done today. I forgot to take a photo of it before i painted it. Just know that it was ugly. đŸ˜† If we still don't have heat Monday, I'll work on the one in the snug (old kitchen). I didn't expect to get this project done until later in spring. It looks so pretty!

Today was a rough day with very high winds. We lost our very large maple tree on the east side & probably the largest storm window we have on the house on the west side from the dining room window. We'll assess more tomorrow. Fortunately, the tree fell AWAY from the house or this could have been a much more tragic day. Expecting more high winds again Sunday. Ugh!

From kitchen to cozy! This room has been transformed from an impractical tiny kitchen with 5 doorways & a large window to a warm & inviting snug. I still need to paint the radiator once the heat is off, reupholster the antique settee & chair, & hang some more artwork.

Special mention to Susie Huber Westcott (former owner of the antique settee & chair). I got these from her years ago & am finally using them. They fit like they were made for this room & the wood color is a perfect match. I'll post photos again once they are reupholstered.

The last photos show the beautiful trim. This room only had a tiny piece of baseboard because the walls were lined with a few cabinets & appliances. This baseboard was salvaged from the Lowe house on W 3rd. (I'll have to get the address, but the house is still standing). Wayne Bunker is flipping the house & gave this trim to our neighbor & our neighbor gave it to us. I stripped & stained it to match our other trim. The baseboard cap (decorative trim on top of the baseboard) came from the apartment building that was torn down next to the wedding venue, 34 West (34 W Main). Dave Van Baalen allowed me to save some trim a couple days before the building came down. It was stained very dark & I stripped it & used a lighter opaque stain to get it to match the other trim. It's the details that make this house so grand!

Jodi Grant from Dawalt Flooring helped us get the hardwood flooring. You don't need a big box store to get good quality flooring in this town. We've bought flooring from her and her dad several times. I stained the new flooring to blend with the 130-year old floors in the adjacent room & Russ installed them. We're thrilled with the results!

The next project will be to finish the butler's pantry!

Special thanks to everyone who played a part in the restoration of this room over the past 10 months-- Diena Mckinney, Hope Townsend, Charles McKinney , Steven Ambrose , & Camp DC.

We've had these lights restored for over a year now. We finally got them hung in the snug (former kitchen). The pan light chandelier matches the ones in the adjacent butler's pantry--it just has different shades. These antique shades helped inspire the green color on the walls. They have lovely emerald stained glass stripes on them. It is so fun putting in the finishes!

Fun discovery this afternoon while tearing up the OSB subfloor layer in the snug (old kitchen). This gives us a glimpse of the 1950's post war fashion. It's very crumbly & not Victorian at all, but a part of me loves it. We could have worked with this if it was in better shape. It will probably be covered up with hardwood flooring--encapsulating it for rediscovery in another few decades.
