Heat wave rolling into the 4th.
Here's how to stay ahead of it.
Your AC is about to work harder than it has all year. A few things that actually help:
Inside the house:
-Set it and leave it. Cranking the thermostat to 65 doesn't cool the house faster, it just runs the system longer. Pick a temp and hold steady.
-Close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of the house, especially west-facing windows in the afternoon. This alone can drop indoor temps a few degrees.
-Run ceiling fans counterclockwise. Fans cool people, not rooms, so turn them off when you leave.
-Hold off on the oven, dryer, and dishwasher until after sunset. They dump heat and humidity right into your living space.
-Check your filter. A clogged filter on a 95-degree day is how systems go down on the busiest week of the year.
-Keep supply vents open and unblocked, even in rooms you don't use. Closing them stresses the system, it doesn't save money.
Outside:
-Give your outdoor unit breathing room. Clear grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, and anything leaning against it. You can gently rinse the coil with a garden hose, water only, spray from the top down.
-If you're grilling or watching fireworks, hydrate before you feel thirsty, and check on older neighbors. Heat sneaks up on people.
One more thing:
-If your AC is running nonstop and the house still won't get below 78, or you hear it struggling, don't wait until it quits on Saturday.
Holiday weekend breakdowns are the worst time to shop for a fix.
We're local, we're around this weekend, and we'd rather catch a small problem Thursday than a dead system Sunday.
