🌲 Storm Cleanup!

During the July 4th wind storm, a large spruce tree broke off and came crashing down. The homeowner started tackling the cleanup themselves, but quickly realized it was a bigger job than expected and called us to finish it up.

We removed the remaining tree and debris, took down a mulberry tree, and finished by mowing the lawn that hadn’t been accessible because of all the debris.

Another property cleaned up and back in shape! 💪🌳

Another major retaining wall project in the books!

We recently completed this large retaining wall rebuild after the existing wall had failed and the hillside had become heavily overgrown.

The project started with complete removal of the old wall and vegetation, followed by extensive excavation to make room for a properly constructed reinforced retaining wall system.

The new Versa-Lok wall was built on a compacted aggregate base and includes drainage stone, drainage pipe, multiple layers of geogrid reinforcement, and properly placed and compacted backfill.

A tremendous amount of the work that goes into a retaining wall like this is ultimately buried and never seen — but what’s behind the wall is just as important as the wall itself.

We also want to give a huge shoutout to our crew. This was a big project with a lot of hard, physical work from start to finish, and the guys put in some long days to get it done right. We’re extremely proud of the work they did and the finished product they delivered.

Swipe through to see where this project started, what went into building it, and the finished product!

🌿 IS THIS TAKING OVER YOUR PROPERTY?

You may be looking at Japanese knotweed — one of the most aggressive invasive plants in our area.

And late summer into early fall is one of the best times to start controlling it.

🔎 HOW TO IDENTIFY JAPANESE KNOTWEED:
• Tall, dense stands that can reach 6–10+ feet
• Hollow, bamboo-like stems with noticeable joints
• Broad, somewhat heart/shield-shaped leaves
• Small clusters of creamy-white flowers in late summer
• Often found along roadsides, streambanks, disturbed ground, property lines, and drainage areas

⚠️ WHY IS IT SUCH A PROBLEM?

Most of the battle is happening underground. Japanese knotweed develops an extensive system of rhizomes that allows established patches to continually regenerate.

Even small pieces of rhizome can potentially produce new plants, which is why mowing, digging, or moving contaminated soil can spread the problem instead of solving it.

🍂 WHY TREAT IT NOW?

As fall approaches, knotweed begins moving energy from its leaves and stems back into its underground rhizomes for winter.

A properly timed systemic herbicide treatment can take advantage of that process, helping carry the treatment throughout the plant and into the underground system we’re actually trying to kill.

Don’t expect one treatment to eliminate a mature patch. Successful eradication often requires a multi-year approach with follow-up treatments.

If you’ve been watching this plant get bigger and spread farther every year, now is the time to start fighting back.

Another paver project completed! 👷‍♂️

For this project, we removed and saved the existing pavers, excavated the area, and rebuilt the base from the ground up to correct settling and improve drainage.

We installed a new compacted modified stone base and bedding sand before resetting the existing pavers. We finished everything off with a concrete edge restraint, polymeric joint sand, and fresh seed along the edges.

Resetting existing pavers is a great way to bring an older patio or walkway back to life without replacing everything. A solid base makes all the difference in keeping the finished surface level and looking good for years to come.

Another one wrapped up by Jake’s Landscaping LLC! 🌱🧱

🌼 Time to Give Your Daylilies a Mid-Summer Cleanup!

Now is a great time to give your daylilies a little attention and get them cleaned up for the second half of the growing season.

Once daylilies finish their main bloom, they’re often left with dried flower stalks, old blooms, and developing seed pods. Removing these spent parts helps:

✂️ Keep the plants looking neat and maintained
🌱 Prevent the plant from putting unnecessary energy into seed production
🌼 Encourage the plant to focus its energy on healthy foliage and, for reblooming varieties, additional flowers
🏡 Improve the overall appearance of your landscape beds

We like to cut the old flower stalks and seed pods back near the base while leaving the healthy green foliage in place. Any yellowing or damaged leaves can also be removed to freshen up the plant.

A little cleanup now can make a big difference in how your landscape beds look through late summer and into fall!

What a transformation!

This project completely changed the look, function, and safety of this front entrance.

We started by demolishing a crumbling, failed cinder block retaining wall and removing the old concrete walkway, which had settled over the years and included an awkward step in the middle of the sidewalk.

From there, we built a brand-new Versa-Lok retaining wall on a properly prepared base with drainage stone, drain tile, and two layers of geogrid reinforcement to provide long-term strength and stability.

The walkway was then completely replaced with new concrete. By adding a new step at the top of the existing brick staircase, we were able to eliminate the step in the middle of the sidewalk, creating a much cleaner, safer, and more natural path to the front door.

To complete the restoration, we re-mortared all of the existing limestone stair treads and replaced the broken bottom limestone tread, preserving the original character of the staircase while giving it new life.

The end result is a front entrance that’s stronger, safer, and built to last—while dramatically improving the home’s curb appeal.

A big thank you to our customer for trusting Jake’s Landscaping with this project. We appreciate the opportunity to bring their vision to life!

If you’re dealing with a failing retaining wall, uneven concrete, or are looking to upgrade your home’s entrance, we’d be happy to help.
