Plant of the week: Abelmoschus manihot, sometimes called sunset hibiscus, originates from the lush tropical regions of the South Pacific islands, where it has long been valued as both an ornamental and a useful plant. It produces large, luminous yellow hibiscus-like flowers with deep maroon centers above bold, tropical foliage. Traditionally grown throughout the Pacific and Southeast Asia as a nutritious leafy vegetable and medicinal plant, it is also surprisingly easy to cultivate, growing vigorously in warm weather and bringing an unmistakably exotic, island-inspired presence to the garden.
