Before you squish that caterpillar, take five seconds and look closer.

That tiny leaf-muncher could be a future monarch, swallowtail, luna moth, cecropia moth, or one of many other butterflies and moths that share our gardens and landscapes.

Not every caterpillar is a pest. Caterpillars are an important part of the food web, providing protein-rich food for birds and other wildlife. Those that survive eventually become butterflies or moths, many of which visit flowers and help move pollen between plants.

Of course, caterpillars eat leaves—that’s how they grow. Some species can damage garden plants when their numbers are high, so identification matters. But automatically destroying every caterpillar can remove harmless native insects along with the troublesome ones.

Before reaching for a spray or squishing one, find out what it is. If it’s a monarch, swallowtail, luna moth, cecropia moth, or another caterpillar causing little meaningful damage, consider letting it stay.

A healthy garden doesn’t have to be insect-free. Sometimes a few chewed leaves are simply evidence that your garden is supporting life.

At our annual Snufftown Garden Club picnic members donated money to purchase supplies to assemble Birthday Cake Bundles. With all the generous donations Sandy and Sue were able to shop, put together and deliver 25 bundles to the local food pantry. Our garden club is very happy to have Paid it Forward.
