Water safety isn't just a pool rule.
When we think of drowning prevention, pools often come to mind first — but open water brings its own set of dangers. Rivers, lakes, ponds, and the ocean are unpredictable in ways a pool never is: strong currents, sudden drop-offs, murky water that hides depth and hazards, and changing conditions that can turn a calm afternoon into an emergency.
Add in the fact that there are no lifeguards on most riverbanks or lakeshores, and the margin for error shrinks fast.
A few reminders for your next outdoor adventure:
🌊 Always swim within sight of others, and know your swimming ability before entering open water
🌊 Wear a properly fitted life jacket in rivers, lakes, and when boating — even strong swimmers can be caught off guard
🌊 Check conditions before you go: currents, tides, and weather can change quickly
🌊 Never assume clear water means safe water — depth and hazards aren't always visible
Water safety travels with you — to the lake, the river, the ocean, and everywhere in between.
