Wonder can begin with something as small as a butterfly.
In the forest leading to the NeuroBeauty Sensory Room, the butterfly release was an invitation to pause and look a little closer. Among the ferns and greenery, there was room for discovery before you even entered the room.

Inside, that invitation continued. Exposed roots revealed the beauty we don’t always see. Bamboo brought warmth and texture. A round piece of glass felt, to me, like a full moon in the forest, while and brought living plants into the sound experience.

I wanted to create a place where you could follow your curiosity and explore your own connection to nature and beauty. My hope was that something would stay with you, a detail, a feeling, a new awareness of what makes a space feel nurturing to you.

This room came together through the care and imagination of so many people. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who helped bring it to life at Design Healdsburg.

Kevin Christison of is one of my most trusted and creative collaborators, and his work helped bring the heart of the NeuroBeauty Sensory Room to life.

For Design Healdsburg, Kevin provided the beautiful bamboo wall, which he had made in Thailand for me, and created the room’s centerpiece: the glass moon.

I imagined a full moon in a bamboo forest. Suspended against the bamboo, with living plants surrounding it, his glass moon brought that feeling into the room. Its delicate texture and the light passing through it invited a closer look, a quiet moment of discovery.

I wanted everyone who entered to experience something of forest bathing: to feel surrounded by nature, slow down, and take in the beauty around them.

Thank you, Kevin, for your imagination, craftsmanship, and the care you brought to this collaboration. This room would not have been the same without you.

A few glimpses inside the Neurobeauty Sensory Room at Design Healdsburg.

The room began with nature. Roots left visible in the earth, layers of plant life, raw wood, bamboo, silk, crystal, sound. Nothing was meant to be simply looked at. You could touch, listen, sit, turn, pause. Through , the plants created their own music, so the room was quite literally alive around you.

What I wanted was not a room that explained Neurobeauty, but one that allowed you to feel it. To notice your breathing slow. To become curious. To feel wonder return. Beauty can change how we feel before we ever understand why.

Community does not simply happen. It is something we create, nurture and build together.

I was deeply honored to be recognized as one of San Francisco Magazine’s 2026 Dynamic Women Leaders at Connected Futures: Women in Community.

The evening brought together more than 250 women at Saint Joseph’s Arts Society to explore the relationships, ideas and shared experiences that strengthen our communities and create a greater sense of belonging.

For me, this recognition is especially meaningful because these same ideas are at the heart of my work. I believe thoughtful design can bring us closer—to nature, to one another and to the stories that give our lives meaning.

Thank you to Paula Cochrane, , and .magazine for this meaningful recognition. Congratulations to all the remarkable women celebrated that evening, including the wonderful women from .

A home’s geometry is never simply visual. We experience it through the way we move, pause, gather, and feel within a space.

In this Russian Hill residence, the panoramic view of San Francisco naturally creates a sense of expansion. My intention was to balance that openness with forms and materials that feel warm, grounded, and quietly embracing.

Rounded millwork guides movement through the home, softening its more rectilinear architecture. Repeated vertical wood grain creates rhythm and continuity. The branching light fixture introduces an expressive geometry of its own, almost like a drawing suspended in space.

I have always been drawn to the circle and the curve. Where sharp angles can direct us, curves allow the eye and body to move more gently. To me, they suggest wholeness, serenity, and embrace.

The result is a home that feels both expansive and intimate: deeply connected to the city beyond its windows, yet calm and protective within.

This is what I call elevated geometry, the thoughtful use of form to shape not only a room, but our experience of being in it.

Which makes you feel more at ease in a home: strong architectural lines or softer, curved forms?

The Soul of Design grew out of a question I have carried with me throughout my career: what can a home do for the person living within it?

For me, design is never only about how a space looks. It is about how it makes us feel, how it supports us, and how our brains and bodies respond to the environments we move through every day.

The book brings together the ideas that have shaped my work for decades, from our connection to nature and the neuroscience of beauty to the belief that a home can help us feel calmer, more connected, and more fully ourselves.

I’m looking forward to celebrating the book during Design Healdsburg alongside and .bayarea. Please join us at on Saturday, October 3 from 4–5 PM for an afternoon of conversation and book signing.

Have you ever entered a room and felt yourself exhale before you understood why?

Our response to an environment begins before conscious thought. The light, colors, materials, proportions, views, and objects surrounding us communicate with the brain and body, shaping whether we feel energized, unsettled, protected, or at ease.

This is where I believe beauty becomes much more than something we see.

A thoughtfully designed home can hold us. It can create moments of pause, reconnect us with nature and memory, and give us a place to return to the deepest part of ourselves.

When I design, I am never simply asking, “How should this room look?”

I am asking:

How should it feel?
What should it awaken?
How can it nurture the people who live here?

Because a beautiful home should not merely impress us. It should help us feel more fully ourselves.

This is the soul of design.

What is one place in your home that immediately allows you to exhale?

A home designed not only for living, but for belonging.

When our clients imagined this family compound in Carmel’s Santa Lucia Preserve, their vision was deeply personal: a place where family and friends could gather across generations while each person could still find privacy and repose.

The landscape became our point of departure. Set between an oak-madrone forest and a native meadow, the home responds quietly to the land. Inside, reclaimed redwood, naturally fallen timber, family antiques, objects collected through travel, and the work of gifted artisans bring memory and meaning into every room.

Nothing exists simply to occupy space. Each element contributes to the home’s larger story—connecting family and friends, past and present, nature and craft.

The greatest joy came when the family celebrated their first Christmas here. Fifteen people gathered beneath one roof, able to be together while still following their own rhythms.

To me, that is what a soulful home can do: hold our histories, nurture the lives unfolding within it, and make space for the stories still to come.

We are deeply honored that this project received the 2026 ASID Platinum Award for Modern/Contemporary Residence Over 3,000 Sq. Ft.

Thank you to for sharing this special project.

One of the greatest privileges of the work I get to do is collaborating with people who truly love their craft.

From the crane operator, to (the bronze sculptor who created this beautiful water wall), to the installation team, this project was a delight from start to finish. Watching the piece hover above the house, seeing it carefully placed into the garden courtyard, and finally watching the lights come alive in the water was incredibly special.

Grateful for a process that flowed so harmoniously and for working with people whose passion brings such beauty into the world.
