There’s a LOT happening at Old Growth Lumber Co.

Chainsaw carving in one corner. Custom designs on screen. Slabs on the move. Sanding, shaping, epoxy work, and those finishing passes that make you stop and stare. 👀

These were the OFFCUTS. Now we’re debating where we’d put them. 🪵👀

The middle section became a commissioned piece. These two ends? They still have plenty of story left.
Matt’s working with pieces roughly 2 to 2½ feet long, each with its own grain, natural edges and possibilities. Coffee table? Side table? Floating shelf? Wood wall art? Suddenly, picking a favorite gets difficult. 🤔

We can picture one beside a favorite reading chair in Carmel, bringing warmth to a Monterey living room, or adding a little natural character to a Pebble Beach home.

They’ve already been clear coated and sanded to a matte finish. That quick wipe gives you a preview of how the color and grain will come through with the finishing coat. Prefer a glossy, glassy look? We can take the finish in that direction, too. ✨

Even the legs change the personality. Matt mentions hairpin legs for a coffee table, but the final choice can fit the piece and the space.

Come for the giant tree cookie. Stay for the bear selfie. 🪵🐻📸

There’s a little history lesson waiting out front at Old Growth Lumber Co., and it’s written in the rings.

Our giant sequoia cross section, “The Tree of Time,” connects growth rings with major historical events, beginning with a marker for 130 BC. Stand beside it, follow the timeline, and try wrapping your head around everything that happened while this tree was growing. 🌲⏳

Then meet our giant carved wooden bear. Excellent photo buddy. Very patient. Has never complained about taking “just one more.” 😂

Six feet of sequoia. A four-and-a-half-foot space. Four edges worth keeping. 🪵🤘

Meet Matt, one of the artists behind the custom furniture at Old Growth Lumber Co. This coffee table started with a client walking through the yard and choosing the exact slab—the grain, color, knots and cracks that made it theirs.

Then came the challenge: bring an approximately six-foot slab down to a coffee table about 4½ feet long and 18 inches wide, while keeping that live-edge character on all FOUR sides.

Matt worked the end with clamps and careful breaking and chiseling to bring it down to size while retaining its organic shape. Those details take a little more patience than a straight cut. 👀

And that beautiful clear finish? There’s plenty happening underneath it.
Knots and cracks need attention before coating, because unresolved pockets can show up later as bubbles and dimples. Here, the table has just come out of the pour booth after its clear coat.

Next up:
✨ Fine sanding, followed by wet sanding.
✨ A two-stage nano ceramic finish: hard coat first, a day to cure, then the final top coat.
✨ Legs—and a new home.

The best part of this custom table? Its matching wall art is literally the rest of the piece. 🌊🌲
A client spotted a giant old-growth sequoia river table in our shop and pictured it on the wall of his Carmel home. One small problem: it was 24 inches too long.

We trimmed it to fit. Then came the fun question: could that offcut become a matching waterfall side table? With wood and blue epoxy this beautiful, you already know our answer.

Here’s what went into that corner 👇
• Precise 45° cuts to carry the wood grain and resin river around the waterfall edge.
• A custom support jig to hold both sections in position while we joined them with .
• About 48 hours set aside for that joint to cure.

In this video, the clear coat is on. Next comes sanding, polishing and a nano finish, plus custom steel brackets and a shop-fabricated aluminum support leg inset into a routed channel.
A lot of careful work behind a clean, simple silhouette.

And the detail we love most? The wall art and table share the original wood and resin pour. The colors, character and blue river already belong together—right down to their shared story.

About 160 years of character. One enormous natural crack. A little lava red attitude. 🪵🌋
Matt’s showing off a local piece of valley oak at Old Growth Lumber Co., and that red streak follows a crack that was already in the wood.

We filled it with lava colored epoxy from , making that natural feature the centerpiece. Wild grain, rich red resin, and a shape that nature handled long before we got involved. 🔥
In this video, the clear coat is already on. Next comes polishing to bring out the finish before the piece goes up for sale. Imagine this one catching the afternoon light in your living room. 👀
And here’s something you might not know about our shop: we mill our own wood. Oak, sequoia, black walnut, sugar pine. You can come explore the grain, colors and character, then choose the exact piece for your custom furniture project.
