The sunrise lit sky was the star of the show at the Loudoun Passive Solar House. Quite a moment for the building in context, gracefully drawing the horizon line!

Construction is getting buttoned up. Stay tuned for views of the light-filled interiors.

The Loudoun Passive Solar House is at that awkward but exciting stage when the details and finishes are coming together but the site still looks like a construction site! We're delighted with the steady progress and attention to detail by our building partners at Houseworks LLC and haystackjoinery.com as we enter the home stretch on this project.

It’s not everyday we get a chance to revitalize a 1780’s brick mansion built by a revolutionary war captain situated in the northern tip of the Shenandoah Valley. The challenge has been to design a renovation/addition to this exquisite example of early Federalist style Architecture, add a world class Michelin Star “fishbowl” kitchen, and renovate the existing structure to house dining rooms, a w**e tasting room, a Speakeasy, a w**e cellar, and guest suites.

Our task was to make all of these modifications to the building without diminishing the historic heart and soul of the property. The additions incorporate a modern and minimalist design language and a dark color palette to clearly demarcate what was built in the 1780’s vs. what is being built today. The roof massing of the fishbowl kitchen mirrors the roof of the existing main house and summer kitchen to maintain a dialogue with the existing forms, yet the color palette and fenestration clearly separate the new addition from the original house.

Sometimes our work serves as a canvas for the display of our client’s personality, vision, and craftsmanship.
The design of this addition to an owner-built existing cabin was always meant to leave room for their interpretive details–like this whimsical take on unique cladding–a quilt-like assembly of wood offcuts, inserts, and found objects. We continue to be surprised and impressed with the owner’s vision for the project, and we celebrate the creativity and playfulness that buildings can have when they don’t take themselves too seriously.

A big thank you to the Town of Leesburg for hosting their second annual Preservation Day Friday. It’s inspiring to see the Town’s commitment to its historic buildings and realizing their value. The Town’s team shared info about the evolution of Leesburg's architectural styles, proper maintenance of historic brick structures, and exciting upcoming events marking Virginia 250. Bonus: we discovered the Campaign for Historic Trades — an incredible resource for training and connecting with the skilled tradespersons who make preservation possible.
