More about this custom staircase designed and built by 👇

We built this spiral to be the piece the room is designed around, not the practical option tucked into a corner.

The structure is a single matte black steel column, with warm oak treads radiating off it. We left them open, no risers, so your eye travels straight through the whole stair.

For the railing we ran fine stainless cable, keeping it see-through so the wood and steel carry the look. Above it, a curved oak handrail follows the helix all the way up, warm against the black steel. That continuous curved rail is the hardest part of a spiral to get right, and it's what separates a custom build from a flat-pack kit.

The result is a sculptural spiral staircase that anchors an open, modern interior. Tight footprint, full presence.

About this staircase remodeling project:

The staircase was a narrow, forgotten space covered in tired gray carpet.

We rebuilt it in solid white oak — wood treads with clean white risers, and a crisp skirt board running down both sides.

We also replaced the old handrail with a sleek matte black metal handrail for a modern, custom finish.

This is the kind of custom staircase remodel we design, build and install across Raleigh and the Triangle, NC.

Two changes turned this dated staircase into the best detail in the house 👇

First, the treads: we went with warm red oak and matched it to the home's existing floors — so the stairs feel like they've always belonged, not like a trend that'll date in five years.

Second, the railing: out went the tired golden-oak spindles, in came a clean metal horizontal railing that opens the whole space up.

Same staircase, same footprint. It just doesn't look like the same house anymore.
