In 2014, the idyllic Reads Creek property was purchased with big dreams, an open mind and above all a deep rooted desire to share this stunning place with others in the community. The progression of farmstead, to Arboretum, to retail nursery has been a fitting narrative for a place anchored in natural beauty and steeped in a tradition of botanical bounty. Owners David and Jen Tubbin are humbled to write that next chapter in the story that is Reads Creek. When Dave first stood in the nursery driveway, his eyes lit up and he said, "I see children playing in the creek, families having picnics in the field, people walking on trails, little kids feeding the koi fish in the pond, and the whole community enjoying this land." While the business itself is all about plants, they have never wavered from that initial dream of making it all about the people. They seek to honor the community-minded spirit exemplified by Royce Jones when he planted the Arboretum and opened his doors to us all so many years ago. Each year, they have continued to offer more opportunities for events and time with family at the nursery. Whether on the beach, by the pond, or on the porch of the gift shop, Dave and Jen want this to be a magical place where the routine of the everyday life fades away and people can just breathe and laugh. Second Nature at Reads Creek has become a destination nursery in just a few short years. People have been driving from hours away to visit again and again, sharing that they have blown away by the unique collection of high-quality plants, the outstanding customer service, the incredible landscaping design installations, and the many opportunities to enjoy this beautiful space. It is a place that epitomizes the very essence of the Driftless area. A place to wander and wonder. A gardener’s vacation. A place, most importantly, for you. We will strive to shatter your expectations, and seed by seed, pot by pot, garden by garden we will continue to develop into the vision you’ve inspired us to reach for. We are humbled by your interest in watching us grow. Welcome to Second Nature at Reads Creek! David and Jennifer Tubbin, Owners

Got shade? Let's make it beautiful!

That spot under the trees or along the woodland edge doesn't have to be boring. Native plants like foamflower, Solomon's seal, alumroot, and fringed bleeding heart bring lovely foliage, delicate blooms, and natural woodland charm.

Fall is a wonderful time to plant many hardy perennials. The soil is still warm, the weather is cooler, and plants can focus on settling in their roots before next spring.

Give that shady spot a little love now, and look forward to what it becomes! Stop in and explore our native plant selection!

Blueberry's quirky cousin has entered the garden!

Meet the honeyberry! These unusual blue berries taste a little like blueberries crossed with raspberries, and they're ready to harvest early in the season, often before your other favorite berries.

They're cold-hardy, delicious in jams and smoothies, and a fun addition to your edible garden.

Want to try something new? Grab these for your fall planting!

A plant that grows your own snacks? Now we're talking!

Goji berries can be eaten fresh, dried for trail mix, sprinkled over oatmeal or yogurt, or steeped into tea. Add them to trail mix, muffins, energy bites, salads, or homemade granola bars.

Have you ever tried a goji berry? If not, get these into your garden while we still have them.

We believe gardens hold meaning. A garden is a place to pause and feel connected to something beyond ourselves.

This October, we’re honored to partner with A Place for Angels, a nonprofit memorial created to honor the lives of children who passed away too soon.

Located along the walking trail in Chaseburg Park, A Place for Angels offers a peaceful place for loved ones to reflect.

Throughout October, when you make a purchase, you can choose to support A Place for Angels. For every qualifying $100 purchase, $25 will be donated to A Place for Angels. If you’d like your purchase to support this cause, simply mention at checkout that you’d like to donate to Rooted in Love.

We hope this partnership helps shine a little light on a beautiful place created with so much love and care. If you know someone who may appreciate supporting their cause, please share this post and help us spread the word.

🍂 Look at the weather this week! 🍂
If you’ve been waiting for a perfect time to plant, this is it.

Cool air, warm soil, sunshine and plenty of time for roots to settle in before winter. Fall planting gives trees, shrubs and perennials a head start on next spring.

So grab your garden gloves, enjoy this beautiful fall weather, and plant something!

We had a little extra sparkle here this weekend. ✨

We love that our space gets to be part of so many special moments. Homecoming, prom, senior pictures, family photos, engagement pictures… we’ve seen a lot of memories made here over the years. And honestly, we think that’s pretty special.

Have you taken event pictures at Second Nature? Drop one in the comments! We’d love to see them!
