Moulton Hot Natives

Moulton Hot Natives Hyper local sustainability sourced from wild populations. Located in Northside, RVA This is the good stuff!

We supply straight-species native plants with genetics of local provenance to the Mid-Atlantic – best bests for attracting butterflies, moths, bees, other beneficial insects, and songbirds. We do not use neonicotinoids in any form. All plants are seed-grown and we strongly discourage the practice of poaching of native wildflowers.

“Bluemist flower (Conoclinium coelestinum), otherwise called mistflower, wild ageratum, and in some places, blue boneset, is in bloom in the mostly brown fields of Virginia now. These disk flowers range in tones from light to dark blue or violet.
Xerces rates them of special value to native bees.
Spreads by rhizomes, so can form colonies where space and conditions allow.” - Virginia Native Plant Society (VNPS)

We have local ecotype Bluemist Flower for sale in three different sizes!

Small 4” pot - $8 (pictured & currently blooming!)
Medium 4” pot - $11

Gelsemium sempervirens, commonly known as Yellow Jessamine or Carolina Jasmine, even though it is not a true Jasmine. It loves to climb high on pine trees and can often go overlooked until the spent yellow flowers dot the ground in Early spring in the Coastal Plain.
It has large, showy tubular yellow flowers contrasted by dark green, lanceolate leaves.

Fortunately this beloved plant is easy to find in the nursery trade, and is perfect for any arbor or fence in a home garden. Be aware though, all parts of this plant are highly toxic and should be kept away from children and pets. All of our native pollinators have coevolved with this plant despite its toxicity, and swarm blooms! It is especially loved by Tiger Swallowtail butterflies as one of their first nectar sources in the spring, and many bumble, carpenter, and mason bees flock to the flowers as well!

Current available in quart pots for $20 and gallon pots for $25.

Beautyberry is now available! Migrating birds love to chow down on the fruit as they make their way south for the winter, and many species such as thrushes, catbirds, and even warblers have been known to eat the fruit.
This species makes an excellent choice for landscaping, and even though it can reach heights of 8-10 feet, once it’s established it can be cut back near to the ground in early spring in order to maintain favorable heights and reset its growth or pruned to a hedge. Native plant gardener beware, though: often times a non-native beautyberry, Callicarpa dichotoma, can be confused and misidentified for the native. Look for the fruit and flowers being directly attached to the stem in the native species, while the Asian beautyberry has flowers and fruit held on pedicels away from the stem. The leaves of the latter species are also much narrower.

Currently available in a tree pot for $40. Our plants are sustainably sourced via seed from a wild population in New Kent, VA.

“The number one question we are getting right now is - “Can I plant this now?” Native plants are biologically designed to be planted before cool winter winds blow in Virginia, making fall a great time to plant
Another benefit is that plants planted now have a head start for next spring. After spending the fall and winter rooting into the soil, plants are ready to get growing faster in spring, instead of having to devote energy to rooting. Flowering is often better the first spring/summer also.
Planting in the fall also helps increase drought tolerance.
Plants get an extra 6-8 months of root growth before they have to withstand dry conditions the following summer compared to planting in spring. Deeper, better established roots are a large factor in determining how well a plant tolerates drought. “ Ash Moulton Lava, MHN

Before running to your local big box store to get your fall mums - considered this alternative!

Chrysopsis mariana, despite its common name of Maryland golden aster, is a Virginia native. The flowers are not only showy, but highly attractive to a wide variety of bees, butterflies, and other insects. This aster has a long bloom period from late summer through fall. Sturdy stems and a tidy, clump forming habit make it a standout in the home garden, but it requires a particular ‘right place.’ Distributed widely in our state, it prefers sun and well-drained, sandy soils. Short-lived perennial, in a happy site it will re-seed freely.
