If you hear your toilet running when nobody has used it, it may be the result of a worn flapper or broken flush valve seal slowly letting water scape from the tank and into the bowl.

You then hear the running water kick in as the tank’s water level drops because it causes the fill valve to kick on.

The good news is that this this is an easy fix if you have the right part for your setup and know what you’re doing.

Many people don’t know that a toilet can leak and waste water, even without leaving a puddle.

To check yours, add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait 10 minutes without flushing. If color appears in the bowl, you have a leak. When you do this test, flush immediately afterward to help prevent staining.
