DOES Architecture is an international design consultancy based in San Francisco, California. We specialize in residential and commercial projects in a variety of styles, with an emphasis on sustainable, finely crafted designs that meet the budget, tastes, and needs of our clients. Founding Principal Eric Staten, AIA, LEED AP B/D+C founded the practice in 2010 after more than 20 years with some of the most noted architectural firms in the Bay Area, including the Stanley Saitowitz Office, SMWM, and Tannerhecht Architects. His experience ranges from custom interior renovations and single and multi-family housing design to restaurant, hospitality, retail, health care, and transportation architecture.

The owner bathes every day, so a tub was essential, as was daylighting: pouring in from the garden and spilling down from a hidden skylight. A continuous datum clad in Neolith Iron Corten unites the space and forms the base for stone from Artistic Tile and a work by Amoako Boafo. I’ve seen two perfect buildings in my time - or as close to perfect as it’s possible get: Bramante’s Tempietto di San Pietro is one, and this is the other. It serves no purpose, it has no program, it is space and material and movement and light. It’s the kind of building we all want to design, and think we will, until we learn we have to have eave flashing. And we can’t use bronze plate. Because for some reason the clients don’t want to pay for it. It’s baffling. So, Happy Sunday. Enjoy!

I had the great pleasure of visiting the new LACMA wing by Peter Zumthor. It is, in my opinion, a masterpiece. It brings all of his strengths to bear: rooted in place, deep in the genius loci; the materiality, the geologic quality, the proportions, the massing, the oh-so-casual looking distribution of closed volumes in the building field; the siting; the light. Oh my word, the light. I’ve heard complaints: it is masterful. The simple-looking color wash inside the small galleries does so much: it sets off the works beautifully, and brings in color without resorting to the faux-historicism of the Getty painting galleries does and the lighting! The slots in the walls that make the ceiling detach and float; the silvery curtain that captures that LA silver-white glaring sky; and it looks like a freeway. Or what a feeesY should look like. And that’s perfect for LA, an ugly city that nevertheless produces amazing visual experiences and stupendous architecture. I’ll be posting more about this place. Five Stars! .

Like it or not, ai is here in architecture, it’s not going away, and its capabilities are advancing at an astounding rate. Adapt or die. The first image I modeled and rendered in Revit and enscape, and then processed through Vera, Enscape’s Ai layer. I made the tile texture map in ChatGPT in about 2 minutes, then I took the final ai image and ran it through chat gpt to change the cabinet style and the entourage (people and furnishings). That took about 5 minutes. So: does such a quick and easy process devalue the work, make it homogeneous and uninteresting? Or does it allow me to present designs in a much more iterative and rapid-fire way? What’s the proper way to deploy these tools for maximum architectural benefit, without making myself redundant, dull, and stupid?

I saw so much in the three weeks I was in Spain and England that trying to post about it seemed overwhelming. Now that I’m back, here’s the Palacio Real de Madrid. It had all the usual palace things: an imposing staircase, frescoed ceilings, gilded domes, rooms covered in silk with embroidered appliqué, a state dining room, endless reception rooms, and a LOT of chandeliers: they’re really into them. Then there’s a room covered in porcelain - because why not? And if you get bored you can always stuff a salon full of your portraits painted by Goya, just before you’re deposed. Everything in this place has political or social significance, nothing is arbitrary. And in case you forget where all the money for this place came from, there’s a handy statue of Columbus oppressing the American natives. Between this place and the Prado, which unfortunately does not allow photography, it was a full morning.
