Decorative rock looks great in a Millcreek yard, but piling it against a tree trunk can create problems.

Rock can trap heat, and covering the root flare can contribute to moisture problems around the trunk.

If you’re adding rock around an established tree, keep the root flare exposed and avoid changing the soil level around the roots.

A little planning now can prevent problems years down the road.

A little breathing room around plants makes a difference.

Decorative rock can give planting beds a clean look, but piling it directly against tree trunks and shrub stems isn't a good idea.

Leave some space around the base of each plant, especially where the trunk meets the soil.

It's a small detail that's easy to overlook when refreshing landscape beds.

Compost and mulch aren't the same thing.

Mulch goes on top of the soil to help reduce evaporation and moderate soil temperature.

Compost is organic matter that can be mixed into garden soil to improve its structure and water-holding capacity.

Both have their place, but they do different jobs.

If you're preparing planting beds in Millcreek this fall, knowing the difference can help you choose the right material.

Before you order landscape rock, check the depth.

One of the easiest mistakes is calculating how much rock you need based only on square footage.

Depth matters just as much.

For example, one cubic yard covers approximately 162 square feet at 2 inches deep, or 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.

If you're refreshing rock beds around your Millcreek home, measure the area and check the existing depth before adding more.

A little measuring now can save a lot of shoveling later.

Ordering rock for a Millcreek project? Which one you need depends on the job, and our product pages say so plainly.
Road base and construction gravel go under driveways, pads and hardscape. Pea gravel handles paths and the ground under a shed or playset. Mountain Oro, Timp Grey, Salt and Pepper Granite, black lava rock and Boulder Mountain Cobble cover beds, borders and dry creek beds.
Our new guide sorts nine of them by job and repeats the cautions from the pages: confirm the grading and thickness for road base, and black lava rock isn't established for fire pits.

If your Millcreek lawn or garden bed has lost some of its spark over the years, it's not your imagination — established soil compacts and loses nutrients over decades of mowing and foot traffic, the same way new-construction fill lacks it from day one.
We just published a full breakdown of the five soil and compost products we deliver in Millcreek: which one levels and fills, which ones build a richer new bed, and which ones actually revive tired existing soil instead of just covering it.

Cleaning up the garden beds this fall? Take a look at the soil while you’re there.

Millcreek yards can have areas where the soil gets hard and difficult to work. Mixing compost into existing soil adds organic matter and gives you a better starting point when it’s time to plant again.

Fall is a pretty convenient time to get it done.

October is a good time to pay attention to what’s underneath the yard.

If the soil in your Millcreek garden beds feels hard and compacted, adding organic matter this fall can help improve the soil before next spring.

It’s not the most exciting fall project, but your plants will appreciate the extra work later.

If your Sandy yard has a slope, a drop-off to a patio, or a plain, tired-looking entry, natural stone might be the upgrade it needs.
We just published a full breakdown of our two stone slab and step products: Blonde Slabs and Steps, the flexible option for general pathways and yard-level transitions, and Guillotine Edge Stone Steps, the same blonde stone with a cleaner cut for formal entries and tiered garden areas.
