Remember those wooden battens hanging from the container’s tie-down loops? Here’s what they turned into

Alan screwed plywood onto the battens, then covered it with pegboard. Now every wrench, plier, clamp and drill has its own spot, sorted by size, right on the wall. Not one hole in the container itself.

Before: a plain plywood wall. After: the kind of tool wall people stop and stare at. Probably under $150 in plywood and pegboard, plus a lot of patience hanging all those tools.

Big thanks to Alan Snewin for sharing this one! Be honest, does your tool wall look like this? 😄

One reviewer caught a thief on camera trying to break into his container. It took the guy over an hour to get this lock off

This is a cargo door lock. It slides over the two middle locking bars and clamps them together, so neither door can open. No drilling, no mounting. Since it’s made of thick square steel tube, a regular padlock-cutting trick just doesn’t work. In the end, the thief had to go after the side arms, not the lock itself.

An hour is a long time to stand in front of a container making noise. Most thieves give up long before that. It runs around $165–$220, cheap compared to what’s inside most containers.

What’s the best lock you’ve used on yours?

Containers get crazy hot in the summer sun. This little guy is a simple fix

It’s a solar vent fan. The small panel on top powers the fan, so there’s no wiring and no electric bill. Cut a hole in the roof, screw it down, seal the edges well, and that’s it. The hotter and sunnier it gets, the harder it works pulling hot air out.

Perfect for a container you use as a shed, workshop or storage, where you don’t want to run power. Fans like this usually cost under $250, a pretty cheap way to make a hot steel box a lot more bearable.

Would you put one on yours?

Okay, this might be the cutest container we’ve ever posted ☕

It’s a little red cabinet built to look exactly like a shipping container: corner castings, locking bar, door handle, even the ridges on the doors. Someone turned it into an office coffee station, with the Keurig on top and probably all the snacks hiding behind those doors.

No crane, no foundation, no permits. Just a few hundred bucks and your break room suddenly has the coolest corner in the building.

Would you put one of these in your kitchen?

If your steel offcuts always end up in a messy pile in the corner, this one’s for you

He welded a simple frame, hung it from the loops up near the container ceiling, and filled it with plastic pipes. Each pipe is its own little “drawer,” so you can see what’s left at a glance and grab one piece without pulling the whole pile apart. It doesn’t take any floor space either.

Worth knowing before you copy it: the thin, perforated drain pipe is fine for light pieces, but heavy steel will bend it over time. Use thicker, solid pipe for the lower rows where the weight goes.

Nice work from psacustomcreations! What would you store in yours?

Okay, someone took two plain shipping containers, one 40ft and one 20ft, and turned them into a little spa in the middle of the woods

From the outside it’s just two dark steel boxes on the grass. Then you step in and it’s bright and cozy, with a comfy bed and big windows everywhere. And yes, there’s a real sauna in there too.

Those two containers probably cost around $10k used. Not a bad starting point for something this nice.

Container owners, take a look at your top rail before you grab the drill 👀

See those little steel loops? They’re lashing rings, put there to tie down cargo at sea. This owner slipped a simple hook through each one and hung wooden battens down the wall. Now he can screw in shelves, tool boards, whatever he likes, without a single hole in the steel.

No holes means no rust and no leaks, and if he changes his mind, it all comes down in minutes. Maybe $30 in wood and hooks.

Simple, cheap, and genius. Would you try this in yours?

Saw this one from a UK builder and the price breakdown caught my eye. It's a one-trip 20ft box, so it's only made one voyage, and the paint is still clean. Inside they put up insulation, plywood on the walls and ceiling, LED lights, sockets and a full wall of cabinets with a butcher block bench.

Their prices, converted roughly to dollars:
bare container £2,500 (about $3,300)
boarded + insulated £4,500 (about $6,000)
add electrics £5,500 (about $7,300)
fully fitted like this £8,500 (about $11,300)

Those are before UK VAT and delivery. With 20% VAT it's closer to $13,500.

Insulation and boarding is the cheapest jump at $2,700. The cabinets and bench are the biggest one at $4,000. Across 160 sq ft, the full setup works out to about $70 a sq ft before tax.

This is How You Build a Shop With Shipping Containers

Front and back of the same build. This is a 48x48x18 shop with two 12x14 bay doors.

The trick? 3 x 40ft high-cube containers ARE the walls.

Result: Clear-span shop in the middle + ∼960 sq ft of lockable container storage on the sides. Cheaper than framing all four walls and you get secure rooms from day one.

Build by: Ryan Dawson - HD Construction
Steel: Stetson Hall - OK Steel
Concrete: Justin Jennings - Pinnacle Concrete and Construction
Inspired by John Jungroth

Next step: Roll-up doors + 200A service.

Would you do open shop like this or frame in the middle?
