Sometimes it means choosing timeless neutrals and bringing character through texture, art and accessories. Other times, it means going against the trend because a design choice simply feels right for the space.

𝐈𝐬 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐬?

It may be naturally associated with relaxed, coastal living, but its appeal goes far beyond that.
Rattan is timeless. Depending on its shape, craftsmanship and surroundings, it can feel modern or traditional, refined or relaxed, familiar or completely unexpected.

The first chair is a one-of-a-kind vintage piece and one of my favorites. I love its sculptural presence and how it challenges what we might expect from rattan.

Perhaps that’s what makes this natural material so enduring. It adapts, reinvents itself and feels at home in so many different interiors.

WHEN OBJECTS BECOME ART
Vintage maritime signal flags were never created to hang above a bed.

But that is exactly what makes them interesting.

I found these International Code flags, “J” (Juliett) and “S” (Sierra), at Black Swan Antiques in Sag Harbor. Their aged navy and ivory cotton, original hoist details and graphic forms immediately caught my eye.

Framed and placed in this bedroom, they become something entirely different: art with history, texture and character.

Sometimes the most interesting pieces in a room are the ones that were never meant to be there.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙢𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙮 𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙧𝙮?

In this bathroom design, a live-edge bath tray was made from a locust tree cut from the garden, paired with dried hydrangeas, stones collected from the beach and a Buddha quietly completing the composition.

Natural materials and collected objects bring something to interior design that cannot simply be purchased. They carry a sense of place, memory and character.

For me, these are the details that make a home feel personal.

The beauty is in the details.

For Maxine and Dan’s wedding in Klobenstein, Austria, every element was thoughtfully prepared by family and friends.

Flowers for the wedding arch, baskets and tables, 150 stones individually selected and handwritten with each guest’s name, jute ribbons and rosemary prepared by hand for the napkins.

Simple materials, natural elements and thoughtful details came together to create a celebration that felt personal, warm and beautifully connected to its surroundings.

Inspired by the sea.

During a visit to 🦞Hummer Pedersen in Hamburg, I was drawn to its nautical character, natural textures, maritime details and the experience it offers.

I loved discovering the details, getting a closer look at the lobsters and experiencing a little piece of Hamburg’s maritime heritage.

As a designer, inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places.

A piece of driftwood, transformed into something unexpected.

This custom coat rack was designed by Blue Ocean Design and exclusively handcrafted for the studio by Shelter Island Made, using reclaimed wood.

Celebrating the natural shape, texture and character of the wood, the piece transforms an organic material into something functional, distinctive and full of character.

For us, design is often about seeing potential where others might not.

Sometimes, a design detail can change the entire character of a space.

These industrial pendants, sourced from the Czech Republic and purchased at Salt & Lumber, were customized in an Aqua finish to complement the kitchen and become part of its visual identity.

A thoughtful design choice can turn a functional element into something unexpected and distinctive.

A fireplace at the heart of the kitchen brings warmth, character and a sense of timelessness to the room.

It’s in these quiet details, the materials, the textures and the elements with a story, that a space begins to feel truly personal.
