Apparently our type is Billie hybrids that turn pink. 😂🩷🌿
We seriously cannot get enough of Philodendron billietiae hybrids over here. Billie brings that unmistakable long, narrow foliage to the equation, but depending on what you cross it with, you can end up with some WILDLY different plants.
And somehow… we keep ending up with the pink ones. 😮💨
These are four of our favorites we’re growing right now:
🖤 Black Billie × Billietiae
Billie on Billie… but make it dramatic. Black Billie brings darker coloration into the mix while Billietiae reinforces that gorgeous elongated leaf shape. Add variegation and you get incredible contrast between deep green, cream, peach and pink. This one just keeps getting better as it sizes up.
🌿 Billietiae × Atabapoense
This pairing makes so much sense. Both parents are known for elongated foliage, but Atabapoense brings its own narrow blade shape and darker tones to the cross. Ours has those gorgeous long leaves with some seriously impressive variegation. You can see characteristics from both parents coming through, which is exactly what makes growing hybrids so much fun.
🎀 Pitbull × Billietiae
One of my absolute favorites — and genetically, this one gets really interesting. Pitbull is itself a hybrid associated in the trade with Paraiso Verde × Black Billietiae, so crossing Pitbull back to Billietiae stacks even more Billie influence into the mix. Ours throws long, narrow foliage with the prettiest cream, peach and pink-toned variegation. Some leaves are heavily sectoral, others are marbled, and no two seem to come out exactly alike.
🌸 Billietiae × Mayoi
This one surprised us. Mayoi brings the potential for more interesting lobing and leaf shape as the plant matures while Billie keeps that elongated influence — but CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE COLOR?! 😍 Ours is throwing leaves with an incredible blush-to-bubblegum pink tone alongside green variegation. Watching both the shape and the color develop with every new leaf makes this cross ridiculously fun to grow.
And THAT is why hybrid Philodendrons have such a chokehold on us. 😂
You’re not just collecting another variegated plant. You’re watching genetics play out leaf by leaf.
Leaf shape. Lobing. Petiole color. Variegation pattern. Pink expression. Growth habit. Every new leaf gives you another little clue about which parent decided to show off — and seed-grown siblings from the exact same cross can still end up looking completely different.
Basically, Billie said I’ll make babies with everybody, and we’re here for it. 😂🌿🩷
Which Billie hybrid are you picking? 👀
