Scientists may have just given us a new way to think about plastic. Researchers at the University of Konstanz recently discovered an enzyme produced by bacteria that can break down certain polyester bioplastics.
They found that the materials tested could be completely degraded in roughly 250–330 days, while HDPE, the most common conventional plastic, showed almost no degradation.

The discovery doesn’t mean we’ve found a universal plastic-eating solution. Instead, it points to an interesting possibility: what if we designed materials with their end of life in mind from the beginning? It also makes us question how we think about plastic. Do we invest in materials that break down more easily, or do we focus on using less plastic altogether?

At Bluevua, we believe innovation matters, but so do the everyday choices that can prevent unnecessary plastic waste in the first place.

Maybe the answer isn’t one or the other. What do you think?

Tap water varies across the country, with different contaminants found in different places.

We can’t always control what comes from the tap, but we can choose what ends up in our glass. 💙

What if the waste we create could become a resource instead? 🌎

That’s the concept behind µBites, a research project from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, developed through NASA’s Deep Space Food Challenge to explore ways of producing food with fewer resources for future long-duration space missions.

With plastic waste continuing to pile up, researchers are exploring new ways to put it to use. In 2025, global plastic consumption reached 225 million tonnes. Yet only around 9% of plastics produced are actually recycled globally.

That’s why researchers are exploring a very different approach: using microbes to transform plastic and agricultural waste into useful food ingredients. Their engineered yeasts can produce proteins, fats, and flavor compounds like vanilla.

However, there’s an important detail: the team is still working toward institutional approval for formal taste testing, while exploring how the technology could eventually work in resource-limited environments like space missions or submarines.

Innovation can definitely challenge the way we use the resources around us. At Bluevua, we’re inspired by that same mindset: finding better ways to make everyday essentials more sustainable.

But that opens the most important question…would you actually eat a cookie made from plastic waste? 👀 Tell us below!
