Here’s the dirt: soil matters! No matter where you buy your plants from, the conditions are probably different in your home versus where it came from. Repot those plants! It’s recommended to wait a week or two before repotting but I’ll be honest…I don’t usually do that. Here’s why: the soil most plants are in when they come from the store/greenhouse is DENSE! It holds a lot of water so that greenhouses don’t have to water as often & because they are much warmer than our homes are. This dense of a soil in our houses can lead to overwatering & root rot. So if you’ve killed some plants, you probably do have a green thumb but just need a different soil mix. I recommend repotting into a chunky soil mix, my recipe is in the photos. I’ve used it for years on hundreds of plants, it works for me & my home, and it’s simple. Can you add more ingredients if you want? Definitely! Plants still staying too wet in this mix? Try a different soil type (big box stores have cactus or tropical or indoor so try them out and see what you like best) Don’t want to mix your own? You don’t have to, there are loads of companies who make soil mixes for houseplants. It’s okay to try out different mixes and soil types and see what works best for you! I’ve tried TONS over the years and this is what I’ve found is affordable for me and works in my growing conditions. The only plants that I don’t use this soil mix with is cactus/succulents & other varieties that need to dry out a bit quicker between watering.
