Not because of anything I said. Because of what they felt.

The horse doesn't care about the attitude. The wall. The bad week.

The horse just responds to what's actually happening inside.

And that moment of honest feedback, without judgment, without a lecture, is often the beginning of something real.

This was from our most recent visit with 𝑯𝒐𝒑𝒆 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆, and these are the kinds of days that remind us why Heartland Estate matters so much to us.

What a Body-Condition Score Can—and Cannot—Tell You

🐴 A horse’s body condition score is useful, but it is only one piece of the puzzle.

Body condition scoring can help us track whether a horse is carrying too little, too much, or an appropriate amount of weight.

But it does not tell us everything about:

• Topline development
• Muscle symmetry
• Strength and fitness
• Hydration
• Hoof balance
• Comfort during movement
• Whether the current workload is appropriate

Two horses can have a similar body condition score and still need very different management plans.

That is why I prefer looking at the whole horse, not just one number or one visual feature.

When evaluating a horse, I want to consider body condition, muscle development, workload, soundness, nutrition, behavior, and daily routine together.

The horse isn’t really the lesson. 🐴

That’s one of the things I wish more people understood about what happens here at Heartland Estate.

A horse gives immediate, honest feedback.

Come in distracted, they notice.

Push harder when something isn’t working, and that usually doesn’t solve the problem.

Change your energy, become clearer, slow down, try another approach—and suddenly something changes.

And then comes my favorite part:

“Where else does this happen in your life?”

That’s where a horse experience becomes a life experience.

This fall, we’re bringing teens and their families into that process through FLOW Together.

Confidence. Communication. Emotional awareness. Problem-solving. Relationships. Leadership.

Not as concepts to memorize.

As skills to experience.

FLOW Together begins September 23 for teens ages 12–16 and their families.

Two years later, I can still feel that moment.

That's one of the things I love most about horses.

They have a way of showing us exactly where our comfort zone ends—and inviting us to decide what we're going to do next.

Sometimes the lesson is about slowing down.
Sometimes it's about listening.
Sometimes it's about trust.

And every once in a while, it's about finding enough courage to say:

“𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿.”

That day, Indiana didn't just carry me down a beach.

He showed me what it felt like to move through fear and discover 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝒅𝒐𝒎 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒊𝒅𝒆.

And yes... thankfully, he stopped. 😂
