A beautiful sofa can sit in a room that feels cold, and so can a perfect color palette. So I start with a different question: who is going to live in this room, and what do they need to feel when they're in it?

That question is at the heart of my latest piece in The Designer's Edit. Read it here:

Two weeks ago, I co-hosted a dinner party with my friend Jennifer Dent Brown.

I tell my clients this all the time: you can walk into a home with exquisite furnishings and still feel cold. Hosting a dinner party reminded me why. I wrote about what that evening taught me and how it shapes the way I design homes. Read it here:

What a candlelit dinner party taught a Main Line interior designer about making a room feel like home, and why intention shapes how a room feels.

I recorded my thoughts right after A Table for the Senses. In about 13 minutes, I talk about the invitation that started the evening, the scent bar in our entry room, the Haitian black mushroom rice I served, and what I'd change next time.

Notes From My Dinner Party

In September I co-hosted alongside Jennifer Dent Brown what we called, A Table for the Senses, an intimate dinner party designed around how our guests would feel from the moment the invitation arrived. I wrote about what I learned. People remember how a room made them feel the moment they walked in, and that was true for this evening and is true for the homes I design. The full story is in the comments.

A beautiful home isn’t always a home that feels good to live in.

That’s something I think about constantly as an interior designer.
Recently, I watched a movie scene where two characters stood in a stunning room surrounded by shelves of books.
One assumed the homeowner must love reading.
The answer?

No. The designer put them there.

And it sparked a thought I couldn’t let go of.
Because while I love styling beautiful spaces (and yes, I love decorating with books), meaningful design is not about creating a picture-perfect version of who we think we should be.
It’s about creating a home that supports who we actually are.
The way you rest.
The way you gather.
The way you work.
The way you recharge after a long day.

Your home is more than something people see.
It’s something you experience every single day.

This week in Designer’s Edit, I’m sharing:
✨ Why the lived-in home movement is about more than aesthetics
✨ The difference between styling and designing for real life
✨ How to stop creating rooms for imaginary versions of yourself

11 Years of Georgette Marise this month ❤ In my latest blog I share the parts of business ownership people don't always see and some of the special moments.

April marks 11 years of Georgette Marise… and sitting with that feels both grounding and a little surreal. Recently, I went back through old brand photos, something I don’t do often enough, and I had to laugh a little. The hairstyles, the glasses, the outfits… every version of me thought she w...

Here’s what actually makes a difference 👇🏽

- Windows: Updated, energy efficient windows can increase value and buyer appeal, but ROI varies, so focus on quality and a style that matches the home.

- Entrance: A clean, well designed entry with a painted door, lighting, and pathway creates a strong first impression. This is what buyers remember.

- Curb appeal details: Landscaping, symmetry, and finishes matter more than you think.

- Character features: Elements like brick restoration or architectural details elevate perceived value.

- Greenery: Mature plants and climbing vines like wisteria enhance charm, but value comes from the overall presentation, not just the plant itself.

A beautiful home is not just about the inside.
It is about how it welcomes you before you even walk in.
