Fencing an Athletic Field or Sport Court
🏀 For a sport court on your property you may want to use a vinyl coated chain link fence rather than a traditional galvanized fence. This will give your fence a cleaner and more professional look.
⚾ A backstop fence would use a much thicker gauged wire than a basic outfield homerun fence. The larger gauge wire means it will take longer to wear down and will have a better chance of standing the test of time. However, a homerun fence sees little wear, is more of an enclosure, and would not require as heavy of a gauge of wire.

Have you pushed on your fence posts lately?

A post can lose half its strength before any rot is visible, and it happens right at the soil line where nobody looks. Ten minutes with a long screwdriver this month finds the weak posts while the ground is still firm enough to do something about it.

💦Protect Your Fence Posts from PNW Rain💦
Some wood types handle moisture better because they contain natural oils or dense fibers that resist decay. Homeowners who work with a local fence installation professional familiar with Northwest conditions often get better long-term results because the material selection is climate-aware.
Key qualities to look for include:
▫️Natural resistance to insects and rot
▫️Tight grain structure
▫️Proven performance in rainy regions

Once your fence is installed you will need to decide if you want to paint it or stain it. This is important step in ensuring your fence lasts and putting it off can create rot so don’t wait to do this. Make sure to research different paints or stains and make sure they are rated for outdoor use.

Have you got a fence project on the list before the rain sets in?

Swapping split boards, fixing a sticky latch, clearing blackberry off the fence line and staining dry wood are all solid Saturday jobs. Setting new posts in late October is a different story, because concrete poured into saturated ground has nothing firm to press against, and the post that looks fine in November is leaning by April.

Since the bees follow the wood grain, painted timber can deter them. Fill any holes or cracks with putty or caulk before painting the wood. If you're tired of keeping carpenter bees from your outdoor structures, there are other options.

Invest in hardwoods like ipe, black walnut, hickory, black locust, and oak for outdoor structures to help deter carpenter bees, with some caveats.

Is a new fence or security gate on next year's list for your property?

In Tacoma, anything over seven feet needs a building permit, and in Lakewood a fence over six feet in a setback can need a variance as well, with no set deadline for a decision. Settling gates, height and permits this fall means the number in your capital budget is one you can actually build with.

This article addresses the right to trim encroaching branches. In addition, it provides information on how trees relate to (and sometimes define) property lines.
Trees and neighbors can sometimes be a volatile combination, especially among neighbors who generally don't get along. So, it's important to know your rights and responsibilities before taking drastic measures when dealing with tree-related disputes.
