A home built of “mud and shadow.”

That was homeowner Michael Lacey’s request for a hilltop site at the base of the Phoenix Mountains in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Rammed earth walls, compacted dirt raised directly from the land, frame the main spaces. Between them, delicate Douglas Fir screens filter the desert sun. The wood will weather to gray far faster than the earth beside it, a slow return to the land inspired in part by artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Casa del Nido Osprey sits between the dunes and the Sea of Cortez in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. Wide arches allow natural light to flow into the home. Brick boveda vaults bring warmth inside, and a rebar sculpture on the roof honors the nest-building traditions of the coastal osprey.

In 2013, the home, designed by Eddie Jones for he and his family to enjoy, received an AIA Arizona Merit Award in the Residential category. Learn more about the design on our website: jonesstudioinc.com

Beside a desert preserve in Phoenix, a neighboring water tank, the kind of view most would design around, became the starting point for this rammed-earth home. Thick earthen walls hold a steady temperature, a wall of glass faces north toward the rock formations, and rain travels down a chain to underground storage, so water-wise infrastructure becomes something sculptural.

Fit means letting the site, the climate, and the people shape the work.

Thank you, Forbes for naming Jones Studio on the 2026 “America’s Best-In-State Residential Architects” list for Arizona.

Every home we design starts with a conversation about who will live there and what the land has provided.

On the Oregon coast, that meant designing for coziness and connection: a circular garden on one side, a transparent wall on the other, framing the expansive view of Cannon Beach. In the desert, it looks entirely different. The work changes. The approach doesn’t.

Jones Studio has been named to Forbes’ 2026 “America’s Top 200 Residential Architects” list. We’re grateful to the clients who trust us with their homes, and to the collaborators and craftspeople who build them.

Thank you, Forbes & congratulations to all of the talented studios on the list.

We’re hiring a BIM Manager to join our Tempe studio.

We’re looking for someone who understands that BIM is more than software. This role will help shape the systems, standards, tools, and workflows that support how our teams design, document, coordinate, and share information across the practice.

The right person will bring deep technical expertise along with curiosity, patience, and a teacher’s mindset: someone who enjoys solving workflow problems, making complex information more useful, and helping teams work with greater consistency and confidence.

Experience with Revit, BIM standards, complex project coordination, structured data requirements such as COBie, and contemporary digital practice tools will be important to the role.

Estrella Mountain. South Mountain. McDowell Mountain. Piestewa Peak. The landmarks Phoenicians know by heart are drawn in black line across 325 feet of the 100 West Washington streetscape, etched onto a partially transparent security mesh.

At the sidewalk, giant granite boulders echo the ridgelines above them, a material link to the rock, plants, and water of the Sonoran Desert.

Security, etched into a sense of place.

What makes you feel secure? What makes you feel serene?

Those were the first two questions the design team asked Phoenix Police Department stakeholders at the start of 100 West Washington. Through engagement workshops at Phoenix high schools, residents were then asked a smaller, more personal version of the same questions.

The answers kept returning to natural landscape, open space, and protected boundaries. They shaped every security feature at street level, and the community’s responses became custom icons that now live along the sidewalk as hiking-trail-inspired markers.

Topophilia, designed by Maria Salenger, AIA, is public art shaped by the people who pass it every day.
