HE WANTED MORE ROOM.
BUT MORE SQUARE FOOTAGE WASN'T THE WHOLE ANSWER.
A homeowner contacted me wanting to expand his family/TV room by partially enclosing the existing covered patio.
Before I started drawing, I wanted to understand how they used the houseโand what this space could really become.
The backyard and pool presented a great opportunity, but the orientation of the house presented a challenge: Arizona's summer sun would hit the new space directly.
Instead of simply enclosing the patio, we designed an approximately 480-square-foot family-room addition with a new covered patio, creating a much stronger connection between the home, backyard and pool while protecting the new space from the sun.
We also replaced the original 8-foot ceiling with a 10-foot vaulted ceiling, giving the room a sense of space that feels much larger than its actual footprint.
And the exterior was designed to belong to the existing houseโnot look like something added years later.
That's the difference between adding square footage and designing space.
Good residential design doesn't start with drawing.
It starts with understanding what you're really trying to accomplish.
Before you build, let's talk.
