It’s hard to stay in the moment sometimes, isn’t it?!

I think that’s especially true when you love gardening. We’re always thinking about what we want to plant next, what we’d do differently or what the next season will bring.

It’s going to be 90 degrees here in Illinois today 🥵 i’m and I’m already thinking about winter containers! I absolutely LOVE winter planting, but I also know how long those winter months can feel once the holidays are over.

Then again, I think that’s part of what makes each season so special. As much as I love creating with fresh evergreens and magnolia, there’s nothing quite like the anticipation of spring after a long winter. I don’t think we’d appreciate that first bit of green or those first spring blooms nearly as much without the seasons in between.

So maybe there’s something to be said for enjoying each season while we’re in it, even if we’re already dreaming about the next one!

And since winter planting is clearly on my mind, a little save the date for my local friends! Potted Charm’s Holiday Open House is Saturday, November 28th! Our Winter Wonderland is coming back and I can’t wait to share it with you!

All I want to do is plant flowers, take care of flowers, shop for flowers and talk about flowers. Preferably with someone who gets equally excited about a really good plant combination!

And if you’ve been around here long enough, you’ve probably noticed I prefer to do most of it in an athletic dress.🤪

Apparently, that’s sparked a little debate over whether they’re actually practical for gardening. Meanwhile, I’m over here planting hundreds of containers in them every season!

So yes, flowers are my first love, but I think athletic dresses are coming in a pretty close second!❤️

2026 Annuals Report Card is here!

I plant a lot of annuals every year, and by the time October rolls around, I KNOW which ones earned their spot for next year and which ones I might reconsider. So here are my grades after a full Central Illinois summer!

Supertunia Vista Jazzberry + Vista Bubblegum: A+

I mean…look at those Downtown Effingham baskets! This combo handled everything we threw at it this summer. Heat, wind, storms, tons of rain, no rain. They grew HUGE and were covered in blooms when we took them down.

Supertunia Vista Cool Jazz: A+

Brand new this year and it lived up to every Vista qualification and MORE. The vigor, the amount of blooms, the size…all of it. But the combination of Cool Jazz with Vista Jazzberry and Violet Ice Superbena may have been one of my favorite combinations of the entire summer. Impeccable!

Supertunia Pink Tiara: A+

Where do I even begin with my love for this one?! Its vigor, its color and its ability to pair with just about anything makes this an A+ for me every single year. I use it A LOT and somehow I’m never tired of it.

Pegasus Begonia: A+

SUCH a huge shade performer and one of the easiest, lowest maintenance options I planted this year. The size one plant can reach is crazy! I paired this one with Catalina Pink Torenia in one of my combinations in the Proven Winners Gardener’s Idea Book this year, so go take a look at that one because the combination was incredible.

Macho Fern: A+

There’s a reason you see me use these year after year in container combos and stand alone. BIG impact, incredible growth and they can completely fill a large container. Give one enough room and by the end of summer it’s hard to believe what you started with in spring. An easy A+ for me.

Catalina Pink Torenia: A

This one was SO close to an A+. Incredible, easy color for shade and I love that it works as both a filler AND a spiller. My only reason for knocking it down a little is that sometimes it all flushes into bloom at once, then you have to wait a bit for the next round. But when it’s blooming…SO GOOD.

Superbena Peachy Keen: B

Nothing wildly disappointing here because the color and vigor are superb. My biggest issue was that t

The bigger the mum, the easier it is to keep looking good. And that’s one reason I LOVE these big tri color mums!

Bigger isn’t only about making more of an impact on your porch. A larger container holds more soil, which means it holds more moisture and doesn’t dry out nearly as quickly. Mums are thirsty, especially once they’re covered in blooms, so that extra soil gives you a lot more room for error. Even my self proclaimed black thumbs can have better luck with a mum this size!

Ours are at a few different stages right now too. Some are starting to show all three colors, while others are nice and tight with lots of color ahead.

One little mum shopping tip: if you have plenty of sun, I love buying them tighter and letting that color open at home. But if your porch or planting spot is shadier, buy one already showing the colors you love. Those tight buds need enough sun to open well, so shade is one place I’d choose more blooms over buds.

We are open today 9–1 or message us for an after hours appointment
