Some of the most important details in custom window treatments are the ones you’ll rarely notice once they’re installed.

Hand sewing rings is one of them. It’s a small step in the fabrication process, but one that reflects the skill and attention that goes into the work happening every day in our Savannah workroom.

Having our own workroom means our team is closely involved in the fabrication process from start to finish. We can oversee the details, solve challenges as they arise, and make sure each treatment is fabricated according to the specifications established for the project.

That craftsmanship is also part of a much bigger process. Measuring, specifying, fabricating, ordering, coordinating, and professionally installing all have to work together for a successful finished treatment.

It’s why we believe the process behind custom window treatments matters just as much as the finished result. 💕

In a Low Country living room with a marsh view like this, the window treatment should complement the view—not compete with it.

For this project, we fabricated a pleated valance with contrast trim to span the sliding glass doors and adjoining windows. Mounted high, it adds softness and structure across a large expanse of glass while keeping the sightlines open and concealing the functional window treatments underneath.

The contrast trim gives the valance just enough definition, highlighting the pleated detail without adding unnecessary visual weight.

This is where a valance can be a particularly smart solution: it creates a finished, tailored look, provides a place to discreetly hide functional treatments and hardware, and still allows the windows—and that Low Country view—to do most of the talking.

There’s a lot to notice in this Richmond Hill home, and some of our favorite details are the ones you discover when you take a closer look.

Working alongside designer William Peacock, our workroom fabricated custom pieces throughout the home, including these living room valances. A contrasting fabric tucked inside the crisp pleats creates an unexpected peek of color and pattern, while Scalamandré trim finishes the design.

Our work extended well beyond the living room. We also fabricated dining room chair slipcovers, primary bedroom drapery, a bedskirt and bedside table covers, library upholstery and cushions, and Roman shades for the guest room.

Whole-home projects like this are a good example of the role a full-service custom workroom can play in a designer’s project. With multiple rooms, fabrics, specifications, and fabricated pieces to coordinate, our team manages the window treatment and soft furnishings scope from the technical details through fabrication and installation—while keeping the designer’s vision at the center of the project.

Inspiration images are a great place to start, but turning that inspiration into a custom window treatment requires thoughtful specification.

For this primary bedroom, our client came to us with images of the window treatments she envisioned. From there, we worked through the details to create a solution specifically for her windows, her room, and the way she wanted the space to function.

Waterfall-style Roman shades keep the design clean, while Samuel & Sons Greek key trim adds a tailored navy detail that connects with the other elements in the room. We also specified room-darkening lining to provide greater light control when it’s time to sleep in a little longer.

That balance of design and function is an important part of our process. We consider everything from fabric and trim to lining, measurements, mounting, light control, and how the treatment will operate before it ever reaches our workroom.

Because custom isn’t simply about getting exactly the look you had in mind. It’s about making sure all of those details work together for your home and the way you live.

Woven wood shades are all about texture and natural materials—but the lining you choose can completely change how they function.

Here’s how we help our clients decide:

Unlined: Allows the natural weave to really show, with more light passing through. A great option when privacy and light control aren’t priorities.

Light-filtering: Adds privacy and softens incoming light while still maintaining a bright, comfortable room.

Room-darkening: Provides significantly more light control, making it a good choice for bedrooms and other spaces where reducing light is important. One detail to know: because of how the shade fits within the window, some light leakage around the edges is normal.

There’s another detail we consider when specifying lining: stack. Adding a lining adds another layer of material to the shade, which means it will have a larger stack when raised. Depending on the window and how much of the glass you want exposed when the shade is open, that can influence both the lining and mounting options we recommend.

The right answer depends on more than which look you prefer. We consider the room, privacy needs, sun exposure, desired light control, window dimensions, and how you’ll use the shade throughout the day before making a recommendation.

Because with custom window treatments, it’s not simply about choosing a shade—it’s about specifying the right shade for the way you live.

October is National Women’s Small Business Month, and it has me thinking about one of the best parts of owning Savannah Window Fashions: the people I’ve met along the way.

Small business ownership asks you to wear a lot of hats. Some days you’re thinking about the big picture, and other days you’re solving the very unglamorous problem directly in front of you. There’s always something to learn.

What has made this journey especially meaningful is the community of women I’ve been fortunate to know—fellow business owners, mentors, colleagues, trade partners, and friends who generously share their experience, offer encouragement, celebrate the wins, and understand the challenges.

I’m grateful for every conversation, introduction, collaboration, and piece of advice that has helped shape both me and this business.

Here’s to the women building businesses, supporting one another, and making room at the table for the next woman, too. 💕

Behind the scenes in our Savannah workroom, where the details of a custom window treatment start coming together. 💕

This Greek key trim is such a pretty addition to a face fabric with subtle color and texture, but there’s also a fabrication detail happening here that you might not notice in the finished treatment.

Did you know that applying trim is one of the first steps in our fabrication process?

We sew the tape trim in place before seaming the fabric widths together. Working with the individual widths at this stage means less fabric has to be moved and handled around the workroom, helping our team work more efficiently as the treatment comes together.

It’s a small glimpse into the planning behind custom fabrication, and why the order of operations matters just as much as the finished details.

A historic Savannah home calls for window treatments that feel appropriate to the architecture, without giving up the functionality we expect today.

In this guest bedroom, we installed a functional London shade finished with fringe and inside mounted for a tailored fit within the window. Behind it, a motorized blackout roller shade with a shaped hem provides privacy and light control at the touch of a button. Integrated rechargeable battery power means there’s no need for hardwiring, making it a smart solution for a historic home.

The London shade operates with a continuous loop chain for smooth, easy movement and is secured with a tension device for safe operation.

Layering these two treatments gives the homeowner options throughout the day while allowing us to incorporate a traditional window treatment style that feels right at home in this historic setting.

It’s one of the things we love about working in Savannah’s historic homes: finding the right balance between the character of the house and the way our clients live in it today. 💕

October is Window Covering Safety Month, a good reminder that the right operating system matters just as much as the fabric and style of a window treatment.

For this Savannah nursery, a cordless Roman shade might seem like the obvious choice. But the heavyweight upholstery fabric used for this custom shade meant we also needed to consider the overall size and weight of the finished treatment.

Our solution was a continuous loop chain system secured to the wall with a tension device. Keeping the loop taut helps reduce risk while giving the shade the support it needs for smooth, easy operation. And being able to operate it with one hand? A small detail that becomes very useful when there’s a baby in the other.

It’s a great example of why we don’t specify window treatments based on appearance alone. Fabric weight, shade size, operating systems, safety, and how the family will use the room all factor into the recommendation.

The goal is always the same: a window treatment that is appropriate for the space and thoughtfully designed for the people who live there.

Drapery hardware is one of those details that looks simple...until you start specifying it.

We work with multiple custom hardware lines because there isn’t one rod, bracket, or track that works for every window. The right choice depends on the drapery design, window conditions, projection requirements, layering, weight, and how the treatment needs to function.

Even the bracket deserves careful consideration. A standard strap bracket may be exactly right—or we may need additional projection to clear trim, a double bracket to accommodate layered treatments, or a horizontal backplate to keep the hardware less visually prominent.

These decisions may seem small, but getting them right before anything is ordered can prevent installation issues, delays, and costly corrections.

It’s why hardware specification is an important part of our full-service process. We consider how all the pieces need to work together, then manage the details through ordering, receiving, fabrication, and professional installation.

Because the prettiest hardware in the world isn’t much help if it doesn’t work for the window.
