I stopped posting on Instagram 5 months ago right after I had ACL reconstruction surgery. I spent the winter quiet. Still. Healing. Mentally tackling things I feared deep inside myself. Finding confidence in my body again and quite literally learning to walk again. Everything felt hard for those first 6 weeks. Everything. A long winter of lots of snow kept my life small and quiet which in some ways was hard but in others I saw as a gift.
Before surgery I felt I was changing. Shedding. Letting go of some big things. But I wasn’t sure what. I felt calmer than ever about life. More centered. Less opinions and expectations. More present. I accepted the good things as great and let the hard things not be a defining factor of life. I became extremely good at hearing myself and my body in new ways. When to push and when to release the peddle.
By February I was beginning to feel more myself. I felt more confident in my body again. My knee was stable, mobile in ways I lost when I became injured, and I found a deeper strength slowly. Very slowly. I discovered my super power of consistently showing up for the hard and my deep sense of commitment played well to healing from this sort of recovery.
At my 3 month mark wearing the coolest shorts I got raving reviews for mobility but a reminder now I have the long road of building strength. It has been a 2 day a week journey of showing up, putting in work at pt, and daily work on my own but now just weeks from my 6 month mark I am feeling so much gratitude for everything in life. Though my physical strength still has a ways to go (12 months is normal) I am myself in every other way. I feel confident pushing mulch, jumping, biking, jogging, and gradually increasing weight, but what I have gained in these 5 months has been more than any physical part of the healing, it is a strong sense of gratitude for my life, body, community, family, and the ability to work out jn nature.
I came to a place where everything was stripped away long enough I could see what I craved to come back into my life again. What worked, what was not, and what mattered most. It’s been the best and hardest 5 months since December but being back working
