Some history on house painting:
About the earliest historians can find evidence for house painting is in the 1200's in Europe.
In America, In the days before automobiles, the house painter would show up to your home in a horse-drawn wagon, and he would have big buckets of white paint, and a box of colorants. He would mix the color for you right on the job site. All paint in the old days was linseed oil, and pigments. There were several other ingredients added, but Linseed oil was the main ingredient.
The paint roller was invented in 1950. Before that, no matter how big your barn or house was, it had to be painted with brushes only.
The first paint company was Sherwinn-Williams, started in 1866 and soon after that the second paint company Benjamin-Moore came into existence in 1883, and their rivalry continues to this very day.

I just finished hanging wallpaper at a really unique two-story log cabin in rural Lincoln County. The wallpaper is period-correct and made by a company that only makes historical wallpaper. It was a difficult job, but it came out great.

Two recent trends in new home construction that are effecting me as a painting contractor:
1. People are now putting in LED can lights in their ceilings.
These new LED lights are VERY bright, and to the point that I think people are going to see a lot more imperfections in their drywall work. I think they should not go as bright as they are, but I guess with LED's they are cheaper to get very bright, and because there is very little heat from the bulbs on them they just make them really bright.

2. People picking their paint colors online from their cell-phones and home computers. This is a bad idea and I now have to mention this to my customers. Colors hardly ever look the same way in real life, as opposed to you looking at color samples online.
I have to now tell my customers to go to the paint stores, and get actual color samples on paper, or let me show them to them from my color decks and color brochures. The old-fashioned way is accurate, and just using your cell-phone to pick colors is a bad idea.

Today, I started a new painting project. I am painting a newly constructed barndominium, or shouse if you like.

As a painting contractor for 35 years, and a person who has common sense, I would like to point out a few things about lead paint on old houses. So many people I talk to about that are way too scared about this subject. Here is my advice to those of you who are so worried about lead paint.
1. Stop believing government/media propaganda.
2. And this one is important: Don't eat the paint.
3. Don't sand it unless you are wearing a respirator.
4. Just paint over it and relax.

Pro tip from a professional painter: Most people in America have white trim and doors in their homes. Consider paying a painter for one day to come in your home and paint baseboards and trim and maybe a couple of doors inside your home. Most homes need to have their baseboards and door trim repainted. It will make a huge difference and I think it is a great way to get the most effect for the least amount of money.
