Water the base of a tree and the roots have no reason to go anywhere. To stay healthy and keep growing, a tree needs a root zone at least as wide as its canopy, and that only happens when you water deep and wide, out past the canopy edge. Where does your water land right now?

Most fruit trees we run into are really struggling. On this one, we pulled back the gravel and found the emitters sitting right by the trunk, not out in the canopy where the roots can use the water.

We added ThriveRing to get water all the way out, then mulched around the tree, out into the canopy but never against the trunk. Trees can start looking dramatically better pretty quickly after changes like this.

Is your fruit tree watered at the trunk or out in the canopy? Tell me below.

When I open up valve boxes during garden consultations, most are a mess. The most common thing missing? A pressure regulator and filter. Drip components can’t handle high pressure, so without one you get blowouts all over the landscape. Rebuilding the box makes the whole system easier to access and work with. Have you checked inside yours lately?

See all that growth coming up from the lower trunk? Those are suckers, and this tree is putting a tremendous amount of energy into them instead of the upper canopy where we want it.

Most citrus trees are grafted, so growth from low on the trunk can actually be a different type of tree. Trim them off at the collar. If you catch them early, they pop right off by hand.

Does your citrus tree have these? Tell me what you’re seeing.

I did over 120 garden consultations this summer, and the same thing kept showing up. Most irrigation systems are filled with dirt, and missing major components like a pressure regulator and filter, which is why so many people deal with blowouts in their drip systems.

Our upgrades fix that and keep the setup clean and simple, so it’s not intimidating to maintain.

Have you ever had an irrigation line blow out? Tell me what happened.

If you're growing peppers, check your plants tonight. This is a tomato hornworm and it's nearly impossible to spot in daylight because it camouflages perfectly with the plant. It'll eat through your leaves and your peppers if you let it.

Here's the trick: grab a black light and check your plants at night. They glow and become easy to spot.

Bonus they turn into a pretty moth. Still your call whether that earns them a pass. If you have any wild Jimson w**d (datura, or moon flower) or wild to***co around, you can move them to those native plants instead of killing them!

Have you ever found one of these on your plants?

Seeing new growth on a struggling plant is a great sign, but don't stop there. Gravel is working against you. Pull the gravel back and switch to fine composted mulch instead: it holds water in and breaks down over time to actually improve the soil. Small swap, big difference for long-term health.

Ever wonder why tree leaves curl up and look burned? It's usually not a disease, it's water stress. Leaves have tiny pores, called stomata, that release water v***r to cool the tree down. No water or no cooling, and you get sunburn like this. Check your emitters, do they actually cover the whole root zone? if not, the tree can't take up what it needs.

Here's a mistake we see all the time in irrigation installs: one emitter, one small wetting circle, but the root zone is way bigger than that. If you've been adding extra water by hand to keep a plant alive, that's a sign the system isn't covering enough ground. The fix is simple: multiple emitters spaced so roots can actually grow out into the full area.
