Fall reminder from the IRS Security Summit: tax pros are still getting hit with IRS impersonation, "new client" schemes, and EFIN/PTIN/CAF scams, and the written security plan (WISP) is still required. Breach notices keep showing the same pattern too: one compromised mailbox, then a ransomware claim or a client-notice letter later. You don't need the firm's name to learn the lesson. It's how far one account can reach. This week, run the IRS Security Six: antivirus, firewall, MFA, backups, drive encryption, VPN. Then make sure one person owns the written plan.

Your VPN is part of the front door. CISA added an Ivanti Connect Secure flaw (CVE-2026-104935) to its known-exploited list after zero-day attacks. It lets remote attackers skip the login and run commands. Researchers saw it chained for root access and credential theft, including LAPS and BitLocker secrets. Thousands of these boxes are still visible on the public internet. If your trucking office, plant, or firm runs Ivanti Connect Secure, patch now, and give any internet-facing appliance a closer look. CISA's Awareness Month advice is simple: update software.

If your plant runs Inductive Automation Ignition, put this on the short list. CISA's Oct 13 advisory (ICSA-26-286-01) covers a high-severity bug, CVE-2026-92817, rated 8.8. A logged-in user's session can be escalated to Designer privileges and used to run code as the Ignition Gateway. Affected: 8.1.0 through 8.1.54 and 8.3.0 through 8.3.8. The fix is 8.1.55 or 8.3.9. No known public exploitation yet, which is exactly when patching is cheapest. Check your Ignition version before the next production window. We help WA and Idaho plants with that inventory.

If your office team dreads preparing the same internal update, test that first using approved information. Agree on the reviewer and what a usable result looks like.

A first test works better as something you figure out together than as an extra assignment dropped on an already full day.
