Planning a Lawns to Legumes project for next spring? ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ Keep us in mind!

Weโ€™ll have a wide selection of native plants, along with curated garden kits that make it easy to create a thriving pollinator habitatโ€”whether youโ€™re using a Lawns to Legumes grant or simply planting on your own.

Skip the stress of planning your garden from scratch! Each garden kit comes with a ready-to-use planting layout. Prefer to create your own design? Weโ€™ll also include simple instructions to help you successfully lay out your plants without using our template.

And NOW is a great time to start prepping your space for next year! Get heavy, black, woven plastic down this fall to start smothering the grass and weeds where you want your pollinator garden to go. A little prep now will make planting your garden much easier next summer.

Contact Jen our Greenhouse Manager for more information about the plastic and to arrange pickup. 218-340-6666 (text ok); [email protected].

The Spring 2027 Lawns to Legumes grant application is open! ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ‰

๐ŸŒผ Lawns to Legumes is a Minnesota-wide program that awards reimbursement-based funding of up to $400 for creating pollinator habitat in your outdoor space with native plants.

๐Ÿฆ‹ Why plant for pollinators? Minnesota is home to over 500 native bee species, along with many butterflies, moths, and other pollinators. These creatures are essential to ecosystem health โ€” but many have faced population declines. Lawns to Legumes helps reverse this trend by creating pollinator-friendly plantings across the state.

โฐ Apply by November 30 for a chance to receive a Spring 2027 grant. Learn more and apply at https://bluethumb.org/lawns-to-legumes/apply/

Lawns to Legumes is coordinated by the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources and Blue Thumb, the education program of Metro Blooms.

Another late-season dynamic duo! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’›

Silky Aster (Symphyotrichum sericeum) + Gray Goldenrod (Solidago nemoralis) bring beautiful purple and yellow blooms to your garden when many other plants are winding down. Both stay around 1โ€“2 feet tall, grow in full to part sun and in dry to medium soil conditions, and provide a crucial late-season food source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Just look at the action on the goldenrod! ๐Ÿ˜

Plus, goldenrods and asters are keystone plantsโ€”meaning they support an incredible diversity of insects that, in turn, help support birds and the rest of the food web. What a powerful pair to add to your garden this fall!

Itโ€™s stories like this that give us hope!! Every milkweed planted, every patch of lawn converted, every native garden added to a school, business, shoreline, or backyard creates another little piece of pollinator habitat.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that monarch numbers increased this year, and researchers say that while weather plays a role, the collective work people are doing to create habitat in their own yards is helping, too.

Keep planting native. It matters. ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ’›

In recent years there have been concerns about whether the monarch butterfly was a threatened species. Thanks to good weather, and an increase in their food, the pollinatorโ€™s numbers increased in 2026.
