NEW BLOOMS IN THE GREENHOUSE!

894 Highway A
Uniontown, MO. 63773

Two new varieties of perennials came into bloom this week in the greenhouse. The first is an “Amarillo Gold” Rudbekia. There aren’t many “Black Eyed Susan’s” that actually have a green eye!

The second is a red Lupine. Not blooming yet is a blue variety as well.

Over 1500 perennials will be available when we open for the 2027 season on April 1st. Less than 4 months until our 8,000 baby annuals start to arrive! Looking forward to a great 2027 season!!!!!

The weather is going to be perfect Saturday! What better way to enjoy it than by attending the Saxon Lutheran Memorial Fall Festival! This is a great event and a wonderful opportunity to support the people working so hard to preserve our areas rich history!

WOW! THEY WERE NOT JOKING WHEN THEY SAID “DROUGHT TOLERANT”!!!!

I think we all get sick of watering by the end of the season. Since my season starts in the greenhouse in January I burn out around June. I do keep the containers in the front of my house watered but throughout the garden where it involves dragging a hose, after June it is TOTAL neglect.

Thought I would share a few pics of things that survived. Actually, not only survived but looking great! The first pic is Lantana growing in a pot. Not one drop of water since June other than the little bit of rain we have received. The others are Lantana planted in the ground. Last is a Bubblegum petunia planted in the ground. The ones I had in pots died but in the ground they did fine.

My pots through out the garden next year will be Lantana everywhere!!!!!

REALLY LIKING THIS ONE….

This is the latest perennial to bloom
In the greenhouse. It is a hardy hibiscus called “Luna”. Hardy hibiscus typically have larger blooms than the tropical and only bloom for a month or so, but they come back every year. Keep in mind that they will die back to the ground in Winter and are one of the last plants to come back out in the Spring. Just when you think it didn’t survive the cold the shoots will appear and quickly turn into a 2-3 foot shrub!

Here are some of the perennials blooming in the greenhouse. Should I have cut the blooms off of these small plants to promote root development? Probably!!! But life got in the way. Anyway, here’s a taste of what we will have this Spring!!!!

FEELING PROUD OF THIS PROJECT!

Two weeks ago my friend Bonnie who serves on the cemetery committee at St. Joseph’s Church in Apple Creek called me in a bit of a panic. Our annual picnic was that coming weekend and many people drive through the cemetery to look at or visit family members graves. The central circle around the altar used to have Knock Out Rises planted there but they all got Rosette Disease and had to be removed (Knock Out Roses are very susceptible to this disease, that’s why I stay clear of them!)

Anyway, nothing ever got replanted in their place and the flower beds were nothing but weeds. It did indeed look very bad. We decided “we can do better than this!”. So we sprayed the weeds and mulched just to make it look presentable for the picnic. Then last week and this week our dedicated crew donated their time and all the plants. We replanted the entire area with 20 Crepe Myrtle’s and Drift Roses (all roses can get rosette disease but some varieties are more resistant than others. I probably have close to 80 in my garden and have not had a problem).

Now, we did not exactly set the world on fire and we hardly built a garden, but it is a major transformation that we are proud of!!!!

GIVING THIS A TRY NEXT YEAR!

This past year, in addition to the hundreds of customers who came to buy flowering plants, we probably had another hundred or so people who came looking for vegetables! As this was our first year it was just a little too much of a learning curve to try to tackle that too. But this Spring we are giving it a try!

We will be limiting our vegetables in the first year to tomato plants, bell peppers, and herbs. We will have about 1,000 plants. Here are the varieties we are scheduled to have:

Tomato:
Better Boy
Burpee Big Boy
Jet Star
Beefmaster
Roma
Sugar Rush (cherry tomato).

In addition we will have red and green bell peppers as well as parsley, basil, thyme, oregano, and dill. We are excited to give this a try!!!!

THIS SURPRISED ME!!!!!

One of the things I was not happy with last year was our perennials. I brought the small plugs in with our annuals in February. While that was plenty of time for the annuals, it was not enough time for the perennials to grow and root to the edge of the pots. So this year I tried something new.

I brought the plugs in a few weeks ago. The plan was to let them grow while it is still warm, keep them in an unheated greenhouse through the winter, and then put them outside in late February to make room for the tender annuals. So the plants arrived, I got them potted, and then it got HOT! Shortly after they arrived we had almost 100 degree temperatures (which means it was 120 plus in the greenhouse). I thought there was no way these tiny plants would make it. But to my surprise they have thrived!

As with our annuals, we are using an new supplier with smaller minimums. That means instead of 15 or so varieties of 75-100 each, we have over 50 varieties of 25 each. I have another shipment coming in two weeks which will take us to over 1500 perennials available this spring. Stay tuned for more updates!

Purple “Roses”?

Getting a lot of comments and questions about the “Purple Roses” shown in last post. These are actually not roses, they are Lisianthus. This is an annual that gets about 10 inches tall and blooms Spring to mid Summer. Will also have a taller peach variety that gets 2-3 feet tall. Lisianthus is an excellent cut flower that will last 7-10 days in a vase!!

NEW PLANTS FOR 2027!

Last week I posted that we will be carrying approximately 30-40 new varieties of annuals next Spring. Here are just a few that I’m excited about.

“Dragon’s Breath” Celosia, Alstromeria, Lisianthus, and Cuphea. The only one of these that I have grown is the Cuphea and had good luck with it. Continuous blooms all summer and stands up to the heat well. Will definitely plant this one again!!!
