"Rainy weather in the Trench."

That's what the caption reads on this photograph of German soldiers on watch in a wooded trench, one of which is looking through a trench periscope.

Time and location is unknown, but due to the trench even existing and lack of helmets, it was likely late 1915 or early 1916.

Happy Veterans/Armistice/Remembrance Day! 106 years ago today, the combat of the Great War came to an end.
It's been too long since I've posted and what a better day to change that than today! Stay tuned, folks. I'm hoping to return to regular posting of photos, videos, and artifacts from World War One, starting in the next few days.

TW: Ballistics dummy gore. *NOT REAL*

This video clip is horribly enlightening to me, as someone fascinated with WW1 (especially the artillery aspect of the war). Many of the first-hand accounts and memoirs I’ve read mention the effects of direct shell hits, or “bullseyes” on comrades or enemies. They often use terms like “there was nothing left” or “blown into particles/out of existence.”
That type of thing was hard to actually comprehend… until now. This video clip is of an anatomically correct ballistics dummy being directly hit with a 152mm howitzer shell. While the shell is of a more modern variety, it’s size (approximately 6-inch) was common of the mid-to-heavy guns used during the First World War. These shells were fired in the 10’s of millions during the conflict. Now we can look at these historical eyewitness stories with a better idea of what they actually saw….. and how horrible it really was.

((Original by the Garand Thumb page/YouTube channel. I just learned of these guys. They have a ton of interesting/crazy ballistic videos like this one!))
