Comparing immigration enforcement to N**i Germany used to be considered outside the bounds of serious political debate.
The Governor of Illinois moved that boundary this week. He compared federal agents conducting enforcement operations to the Gestapo. He compared people being deported to Holocaust victims.
The comparison is not just wrong. It is historically illiterate and deeply offensive to every survivor, every family member, every person who died in those camps.
Federal immigration agents enforce laws written by Congress and reviewed by federal courts. The Holocaust was state-organized mass murder based on ethnicity. Those two things share no proximity on any reasonable moral scale.
Using the worst atrocity of the modern era as political shorthand is what happens when a politician decides that winning an argument matters more than the weight of the words being used. When enforcing a law gets compared to genocide, the escalation ceiling has been reached.
Is there still a line politicians should not cross in this debate, even when they believe their cause is just?
