Preservation Month is coming! The places that make us who we are deserve to be celebrated — and protected!

This May, Preservation Month takes on new meaning. As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we’re reflecting on the places that bring America’s most powerful promise to life, that all people are created equal, and on the preservationists who work to ensure those places endure.

This year, help us celebrate the historic sites, neighborhoods, and landmarks that tell the full American story.

More than ever, your work will inspire others to join the national effort to preserve America’s historic places for generations to come.

📣 Attention preservation professionals in Michigan! Yes, all of YOU!

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is in the early stages of preparing the next Statewide Historic Preservation Plan, and we need your input. Please take our brief survey which is targeted specifically towards historic preservation (and allied) professionals/volunteers who live and/or work in Michigan. We are interested in obtaining your ideas and vision for the future of historic preservation in Michigan.

We also want to better understand who comprises the historic preservation workforce in the Great Lakes State as we consider current and future strategies to grow and enhance the profession. Some of this information has never been gathered before in a comprehensive format. The results of this survey will inform our development of the next Statewide Historic Preservation Plan and will influence strategic direction for historic preservation over an eight-year period, from 2027-2034.

Whether you are a preservation consultant or administrator, work in the historic building trades or archaeology, serve on a historic district commission, or are a student about to start your job hunt, we want to hear from you!

This survey is completely anonymous, has about 12 questions, and should take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Just 5 minutes! Thank you.

This week’s architectural term is LINCRUSTA. Lincrusta is a textured wall covering invented in 1877 by Frederick Walton, who had also invented linoleum flooring in 1860. Much like linoleum, Lincrusta was produced by running a wood flour and linseed oil mix through rollers that produced heavy, textured sheets that could be applied to walls and ceilings. Lincrusta could be painted, varnished or gilded and became harder over time as the linseed oil continued to polymerize.
