Facebook once again says that people haven't seen a post lately. I did one the other day. What more do they want?
People look at me ask, "What do you do for a living?". "I manufacture sawdust" is usually my answer. In fact, it's in my medical records as that's what I do! I don't really understand what the big deal is with what you do for a living. There's always something coming up as far as maintaining the equipment that you work with. Chainsaw bars wear down with use and need to be 'dressed' to bring them back to life. In this picture, these are just two examples of the bars I associate with. The big yellow one is on the firewood processor and the small one is my littlest carving bar. What the funny thing is, the cost difference. $90.00 in the bars and $6.00 in the chains. The picture is a little deceiving. It's a 12 inch loop and an 8 inch bar.To me it's mind-boggling. I love what I do. Most people think that you just start a saw and charge way too much for some piece of wood. Well, so be it. I went to Menards and looked at the price of a slab of wood similar to what I use for making my signs. Guess what? It's almost the same price as my personalized signs are. So where's all the extra money going? Yeah, right. Anyway, back to point. I was asked to make a bench for a benefit for a family for the end of May. The husband got caught in a power take-off and was messed up pretty bad. I'm donating a bench. I like building benches and this is a 'signature' one so this will be a, ONE AND DONE. Do I worry about the cost of it? Yes and no. You can't put a price on helping out somebody else. The wear and tear on the equipment, raw and finishing materials, hours involved, it adds up but knowing the circumstances, it becomes irrelevant. I don't know if other businesses are hit up with requests for donations as much as I am. It's a unique niche but I've noticed you hear from someone asking for something and once you deliver, crickets.
I've been slacking this past year and a half to two years with my carving. I've had some issues with my health that I am just starting to bounce back from. For all of those people who have ordered things, I'm on way of a comeback. There's a little project that I am trying to put together and if approved, I will try to figure out how to raise the money to build it. Materials and labor is not cheap for this one.
If you see me posting pictures of a sawdust pile, I cut firewood. If you're curious, if the logs are decent size, I can cut a semi load of logs (12 to 14 cord) into firewood in about 5-6 hours. Brute Force USA makes an excellent machine and the customer service is beyond expectations.
So you see, if you feel like everything costs so much, life happens. You have maintenance in your home, garage, business, whatever and wherever. I guess that's what it called the cost of living. Will I be a millionaire? Probably not. Not unless I win the lottery but I've heard you have to buy tickets to win. If I can leave a legacy of being a good person and if you smile when you hear my name or Syryczuk's Carvings, that's all I can ask for.
