Nobody is home when it happens. That is the part that makes it expensive.
The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety studied washing machine water damage claims and found that supply hose failures were behind more than half of them, with the average claim landing at $5,308 after the deductible. The detail that should worry you is the age. The hoses in that data averaged 8.7 years old when they let go, which means they spent years looking perfectly fine right up until the morning they split. Washing machine failures account for a meaningful share of all household water damage claims, and unlike a slow drip under a sink this one runs at full line pressure with nobody in the room to hear it start.
The failure almost never happens in the middle of the hose. It happens at the crimped metal collar where the rubber meets the valve, because that collar is where the hose gets squeezed, flexed and stressed all at once. That is also exactly where the hose folds when you shove the machine flat against the wall, so leave at least 4 inches of clearance behind the washer and let the hose curve in a wide loop instead of doubling over on itself. While you are back there, hand tighten each coupling and give it about a quarter turn with pliers and stop, because cranking it down crushes the rubber washer inside the fitting and starts a slow weep at the same joint.
Two habits handle almost all of the risk, and neither one is expensive. Replace both hoses on a 5 year schedule and write the install date on them in permanent marker so you are never guessing how old they are. Then close the hot and cold valves after the last load of the week, which most people skip because the handles sit behind a heavy machine and go stiff after years of sitting open. A single lever shutoff valve fixes that with one handle and one motion, so the hoses spend their idle hours with no pressure behind them at all. Both jobs together take under an hour and need one adjustable wrench.
A new pair of hoses costs about $20 at any hardware store, and the average flood costs roughly 250 times that. Adjusters describe the same scene over and over: a hose that came with the house, a family that was out for the day, and a subfloor that has to come up. [GOHBR]
