Planning a new foodservice space? Start here. 🔨

Before construction ever begins, there are a few things every owner needs to nail down: your menu, expected volume, kitchen workflow, equipment needs, and available space and storage.

Getting these right from the start saves time, money, and headaches down the line.

Behind every slow pour or bottlenecked service, there's usually a design problem lurking. 👻

Tight spaces, inefficient layouts, hard-to-reach equipment, and inadequate storage can turn a bar's workflow into a nightmare.

Good design isn't just about looks, it's about keeping your team moving efficiently, even during the rush.

A kitchen's efficiency comes down to more than what's in it.

It's about how the space is laid out, how employees move through it, where storage and prep areas live, and how equipment is positioned to support the flow of service.

When that design works, everything else, including the equipment, performs better.

The holiday rush may feel months away, but for foodservice operators, now can be a good time to start planning.

Increased volume during Thanksgiving and the holiday season can put added pressure on kitchens, serving areas, storage, equipment, and staff workflows. A thoughtful foodservice design can help operators identify potential bottlenecks and make better use of the space and resources they already have.

From equipment placement to prep areas and traffic flow, planning ahead can help your operation be better prepared when the busy season arrives.

September is National Food Safety Month! 🧼

Food safety starts long before a meal reaches the customer. Thoughtful kitchen design can help support safe and efficient operations through intentional workflow, properly placed equipment, and dedicated areas for sanitation and food preparation.

At FSDC, we consider how each element of a foodservice space works together to support the people using it and the operations they rely on.

This month, we’re highlighting the role design can play in creating functional foodservice environments where safety is part of the plan from the start.

Designing a restaurant means balancing the vision with the realities of the space.

For Pelon’s Baja Grill, FSDC designed the Red Mill location with a focus on efficient food preparation, a streamlined ordering and pickup process, accessible ingredients, seating capacity, bar visibility, and patio access.

Even with unique site challenges, the final plan brought these moving pieces together to create a functional space designed around the restaurant’s needs.
