I’ve always been a disciplined person. Always. I take pride in showing up, doing what needs to be done, and staying committed to the things that matter to me.
But lately, I’ve been thinking about discipline differently.
There are mornings when I’m up, getting my grandkids ready, dropping them off, and heading straight to the gym. It’s routine. It’s discipline. It’s something I’ve committed myself to.
But then there are moments when I feel like I need to slow down. Moments when I know I need to sit in the Word a little longer, spend more time in God’s presence, and simply be still.
Because as much as taking care of my body matters, taking care of my spirit matters even more.
And after visiting Trinidad, coming home to the place where my life began, I’ve found myself thinking about life in a way I can’t fully explain.
We spend so much time building. Building businesses, building homes, building financial security, building a future. We’re constantly working toward the next thing, the next goal, the next milestone.
But somewhere in the middle of all that building, I wonder if we sometimes forget to live.
We forget to be present. We forget to appreciate the people who have walked this journey with us. We forget to sit still long enough to hear what God is saying.
And I’m beginning to understand that not every moment requires me to push harder. Sometimes, I need to pause. Sometimes, I need to pray. Sometimes, I need to be still long enough to remember why I’m here in the first place.
I’m not losing my discipline. I’m learning to surrender it to God.
Because I don’t just want to be productive. I want to be purposeful.
I don’t just want to build a life. I want to live the life God has given me.
And I don’t want to spend so much time preparing for the future that I forget to experience the present.
Maybe the next season of my life isn’t about doing more. Maybe it’s about being more present with God, with the people I love, and with the life He’s already blessed me to live.
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
