Bowie Gridley Architects specializes in the programming, planning and design of projects for educational, cultural and community institutions throughout the U.S. Founded in 1981, the firm is recognized for designing and crafting outstanding architecture that consistently exceeds client expectations. Our architectural, planning and interior design professionals work with clients throughout the nation and internationally, providing services including: - Facility Condition Analyses - Feasibility Studies - Programming - Master Planning - Architecture - Interior Design - Historic Preservation - Adaptive Re-Use

Mission: We call our philosophy “Innovation in Context”—a belief that our best work is that which finds new methods, new materials, and new ideas and weaves those elements into the context of a specific community. “Innovation in Context” means that Bowie Gridley stretches boundaries, but we don’t break them. From client to client the context may vary—it may be geographic, stylistic, cultural or historical—but time and again we produce designs that are at one with their surroundings and reflect the unique communities they serve.

BGA is pleased to announce that the Fairfax County John Marshall Library in Alexandria, Virginia has received an Award of Excellence from the Northern Virginia Chapter of NAIOP under the Capital Improvements of Institutional Buildings category. The library, originally constructed in 1975, serves the Rose Hill neighborhood as a vital resource, providing access to information, meeting spaces, and venues for community events. Bowie Gridley Architects’ design for the renovation transformed the exterior of the building by creating a new visitor entrance and exposing the dramatic interior spaces. The renovated building includes improved collections and seating areas, quiet and group study rooms, and expanded staff workspaces. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems were updated to modern standards and all interior room finishes and furnishings were provided by BGA. The design features a light-filled interior spine that connects the main functions of the building, establishing a modern and welcoming feel along the street. The project was designed to achieve USGBC LEED Silver certification.

Virginia Theological Seminary, located in Alexandria, Virginia, officially dedicated Bicentennial Hall (formerly known as Francis Scott Key Hall) on Wednesday, November 13, 2019. The renovated gallery space is home to the Seminary’s two gypsum slab relief carvings from the Assyrian civilization which dominated the Middle East in the first millennium B.C.E.

Bowie Gridley Architects (BGA) designed the pre-civil war era building renovation as a multi-purpose display room and worked with engineers to completely replace the mechanical system to comply with 21st century museum standards.

Structural engineering included foundation reinforcement and floor replacement of the nearly 200-year old building to support the massive weight of the relief carvings and their display cases. Now visible are both sides of the carvings showing cut marks possibly caused by the extraction from their original home. Richard Molinaroli provided design of the interior finishes, exhibit display cases, lighting, and signage panels.

Virginia Theological Seminary has been a long-time client of BGA beginning with a residential housing project in the 1990’s and continuing recently with the renovation of Addison Academic Center (currently under construction). Renovation to Bishop Payne Library is currently in the design process and is scheduled for construction to begin mid-year 2020.

Middle school groundbreaking

05/14/2019

Over the last 8 weeks, BGA's volunteer architects visited Ms. Burleigh's 2nd grade class at Hearst Elementary School in Washington, DC to teach students about the architectural design process.

Weekly lessons included discussions about drawing, different types of structures, climate and even a little geometry. A neighborhood walk encouraged students to sketch nearby buildings and consider the difference of public space vs private.

For the final project each student was responsible for building a zoo habitat. The result was amazing and all of the students were so proud of what they had built, they invited over 30 parents and siblings to the reception.

This was BGA's 12th year participating in AIA|DC #ArchitectureInSchools with @WashArchFound and we're already excited for next year!
