In honor of #blackhistorymonth, let's take a look at one of our projects, Dorothy Hamm Middle School (formerly Stratford HB Woodlawn Middle School) in Arlington, VA.

This #historic school carries an educational and socially-progressive legacy as one of the first public schools in Virginia to fully #desegregate after the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education; a decision that was made with the help of #civilrights activist and former student, Dorothy Hamm. The project is expected to be completed later this year. Continue to follow us to see images of the finished school.

She was a #trailblazer for the African American community as a #politician and a #volunteer. Click here to visit the Library of Virginia’s webpage dedicated to the accomplishments of Dorothy Hamm: http://ow.ly/bHKU50yqRc4

The Fairfield: A Custom Workstation Designed to Help Families — Quinn Evans

When designing the Fairfield Area Library in Henrico County, VA, a challenge arose: could we design something that would accommodate parents with infants or toddlers who want to use the library’s computers?

Shannon Wray, Chuck Wray, and Andrea Quilici worked with Fairfield Library and TMC Furniture to develop a unique solution, now named "The Fairfield."

To learn more about this creative workstation, click here: http://ow.ly/vccf50ypICv

And don't miss your chance to speak with the team themselves at the Public Library Association conference in a week! Hope to see you in Nashville!

Paul Laurence Dunbar House Historic Site - Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service)

Paul Laurence Dunbar was an American author, poet, and playwright known for his use of dialect and conversational style in conveying metaphor and rhetoric. He was also a #civilrights activist.

In 1904, Dunbar purchased a home in #Dayton, Ohio for his mother and lived there until his death in 1906, at age 33. The home was later purchased by the state of Ohio and dedicated as the first state memorial to an African American in 1936. It is now a #NationalHistoricLandmark and part of the National Aviation Heritage Area.

QE is conducting an onsite #survey that will lead to the completion of measured drawings and photographs, historic building and landscape chronology, Historic Structures Report, Cultural Landscape Report, and treatment recommendations for the Paul Laurence Dunbar House and barn on two lots that comprise the property.

Which #existingbuildings should be saved, and what are the best #tools for assessing whether or not to build new?

You'll find out the answer to this question and more at this year's Carbon Positive Conference and Expo from March 2-4, 2020 in Los Angeles. QE's Principal Emeritus Carl Elefante and Director of Sustainability Julia Siple will join together at a session to discuss why preserving existing buildings is key to avoiding #embodiedcarbon construction.

One of Ralph Rapson’s Minneapolis landmarks, the #brutalist Southeast Library, is back and better than ever! Now renamed in honor of a prominent women’s rights leader, the Arvonne Fraser Library in Hennepin County, Minnesota, reopened on Jan. 25th as a renewed #community resource. Our heritage team consulted with MacDonald & Mack Architects to preserve and renovate this this brutalist gem into a bright and welcoming library. The new design marries Ralph Raspon’s playful original #architecture with a lively, inviting renovation. The team opened the library’s main floor down to the lower level through a large opening, a new elevator, and better connections to the library’s existing stairs. From the lower level, patrons are now given a new view of Ralph Rapson’s #modernist, concrete waffle slab, puncture by his unique skylights. These skylights bring natural light down into what was once a dark basement, literally shedding new light on a modern #landmark.

It’s #BlackHistoryMonth, and we’re excited to celebrate!
All month, we’ll be sharing the stories behind significant sites perpetuating the legacy of some extraordinary Americans – like Charles Young, who overcame inequality to become a leading national figure in the years after the Civil War.
Not only was he the first African American national park superintendent, but he became the highest-ranking African American United States Army officer prior to World War I.
And there is so much more to his story! Visit the National Park Service website to learn more: https://www.nps.gov/chyo/index.htm

Today is National Cut Your Energy Costs Day! Here at #QE we bring a long-standing commitment to sustainable design and strive to eliminate as much energy use as possible. Did you know, the new Henrico County Fairfield Area Library is almost double the size of the county’s old branch library, but is designed to use less than half of the energy per square foot! That’s enough energy savings to power 14 average American homes! Learn more about this project and others here: https://bit.ly/36CbNf3

The Air and Space museum gets a facelift, and its famous planes get a thorough exam

For those of you who are following the renovation of the National Air and Space Museum closely, you may have wondered what happened to all the planes. They've actually been carefully transported to a new storage facility at the Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia where they're getting inspected and fixed up. One plane hadn't seen a tune up in 43 years!
