Miles of piles this season. Every book someone you know (a podcaster) has suggested. Too many of the internet’s most viral pants to count. All the products for all the skin types. Toys, decor, and I didn’t even include all the craft supplies (when my estrogen dips my marker supply rises). Tag yourself - which pile would we find at your house that needs some decluttering (and/or a shopping habit change)?

Death has been a significant part of my work and life, in greater frequency than before, in recent years - part of the stage of life I am at I’m sure, as well as a function of my role as a professional organizer. While helping several of my clients cope with particularly difficult death experiences in the last year I knew that I I wanted more tools to support them in our work together, so in June I completed the End-of-Life Doula Professional Certificate through the University of Vermont, and I’m now a trained Death Doula.

A death doula is a trained, non-medical companion for people who are dying and for the people who love them, working alongside hospice and medical care (never in place of it). We can handle many of the compassionate and practical aspects of preparing for the end like paperwork, preserving memories and the logistics of who-does-what and who-gets-what - freeing up more time for clients to grieve, focus on medical care and living life as well as possible for as long as possible.

I came to organizing from public health, and I’ve spent years helping people decide what stays in their lives based on what truly supports their well-being. The end of a life asks similar questions: what matters, what’s unfinished, and what we leave for others to carry.

Whether I’m helping someone sort through a loss, downsize with intention, or create a legacy project after retirement, I can now bring what I’ve learned in this training to every aspect of my work. I’m thankful for the clients who invite me in during their toughest days and if you or someone you love could use this kind of support, please reach out. 🤍

I’m excited to share that I’m stepping into a new volunteer role as the Authorship & Publishing Special Interest Group Leader for NAPO! 🎈📚

I volunteered for this role because I believe professional organizers have so much expertise and so many important stories to share, and I want to help more of us turn those ideas into books, articles, blogs, newsletters, and other published work.

Our group brings together the NAPO members who are interested in writing and publishing, whether they are just starting to explore an idea or are already established authors. My goal is to make that process feel more accessible, collaborative, and useful for organizers at every stage.

Why does this matter? Because when professional organizers share our expertise, we help the public better understand the real impact of our work, from reducing overwhelm to creating healthier, more functional lives.

Writing and publishing pushes me to keep researching, learning, and translating what I know about organizing into practical ideas that can help people beyond the organizing session. I believe that makes me a better organizer, speaker, and resource for my clients.

If you work in publishing, writing, editing, publicity, literary representation, or another part of the authorship world, I’d love to hear from you. If you have an idea for something our 2,000-member community could learn from, or simply want to connect, please reach out!

Here’s to getting more great organizing ideas out into the world. 📚✨

A very joyful “how it started -> how it’s going post”: Gifting Marie Kondo a copy of my book 10 years after we first met! 📖 🫶

10 years ago this weekend I spent three days in the basement of a NYC building to take Marie’s first KonMari by Marie Kondo consultant training. I had just left my job at HHS to learn how to fold underwear instead of designing and managing global health programs anymore. I wasn’t sure what would come next, and I certainly did not expect to write a book someday about the relationship between health conditions and clutter, but I’m really happy and proud of myself that doing so turned out to be part of my professional journey.

When I was in Japan in May with members of our KonMari community I had the chance to thank Marie for inspiring the last decade of my life and to give her a copy of my book, which I have always aimed to be complementary to her method and written from my public-health informed background. She was so gracious and congratulatory, and it felt like a true full circle moment. ❤️

So how did I wind up walking around Japan last month? 🇯🇵 Well I went on a retreat there for a week with my fellow KonMari by Marie Kondo consultants and members of team KMI! 30 of us from around the world met up there to explore Japan through Marie Kondo ‘s eyes and practices. 🎋🍙🌳We visited gardens and shrines and participated in crafting activities in three different cities, while getting to know one another better and eating a lot of very delicious food. 🍱 As I near my 10-year anniversary this August of leaving my previous career to become one of Marie’s first certified consultants this was a wonderful commemoration of a major turning point in my life.❤️🙏

Fueled by allergy meds and dirty soda, Spring has sprung online and IRL. Looking for Nicole in my end-of-life doula course and finding new uses for my label maker in the garden. What’s next on your spring cleaning list? 🤧🌸
