Beecher Hill condos make a statement without shouting

Very excited to share this feature in the Washington Post of our Beecher Hill Condominium project with PT Blooms Development. A 9-unit building with interior court yard, reclaimed brick front façade, and plenty of natural light. Take a read and a look inside.

BUYING NEW | The nine-unit building is nearing completion in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood.

A nice feature of one of our projects from a number of years ago. Thank you Kebony for the shout out!

JKA….a refreshed look

As a design entity it’s a priority that the image of the firm be consistent with the work we produce. Together with subLoft (subloft.com), our website designer, and AKH Consulting, copy and editing of content, we spent endless hours curating and coordinating the NEW WEBSITE (kuhnarchitect.com). The launch also coincided with the 8th Anniversary of JKA and the celebration of many new projects! Watch the slideshow for a taste of those projects. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Country roads, take me home....

This is the view our Client will have from their new home located in the mountains of West Virginia. Set along a ridge overlooking a scenic section of the Shenandoah Valley the project will take advantage of the natural surroundings and is also intended to be off-the-grid. And, it’s now official, I’m licensed in the State of West Virginia! We’re excited to dive into this ‘challenge’!

Very excited to share this gem! A modern rear and vertical addition with butterfly roof completely transformed an otherwise non-descript 2-story brick home in the Chevy Chase neighborhood of DC.
Wood siding was used to lend some warmth and wrap the third-floor addition and drape down over the existing brick, effectively stitching the old and new together.
The interiors are spacious and filled with natural light via a plethora of large windows.

A great example of the intersection between old and new. A fully renovated 19th-century wood sided Victorian structure is complimented by a bright and airy modern addition.

Extensive measures were taken to restore the historic structure to its stately yet moody character. The new structure, while stylistically different, still pays homage to the old thru the placement of the addition (secondary in nature), window alignments, and material choice. A delicate attachment of the new to the existing came by way of frameless corner glass and wood siding. The glass ‘eroded’ what would otherwise be a hard connection and the wood softened and warmed the touch.

In all, the combined includes 8 luxury condominiums along the lively Florida Avenue within the Historic U Street Corridor of Washington, DC.

We’re excited to share that JKA is the recipient of an AIA|DC Chapter Design Award for our involvement with the Bancroft Elementary School renovation project! Led by Ayers Saint Gross, the project included the renovation of the existing 1923 and 1932 school buildings plus a large elegant addition.
JKA focused on the existing school buildings. Much of our energy was spent on understanding how to modernize these old buildings while retaining their historic character. At first, it was an investigative exercise of peeling away layers of previous renovations to uncover original details and finishes. Then, we had to put it back together integrating the program for the school while meeting current building codes for both energy and safety compliance.
We want to especially thank Ayers Saint Gross for bringing us onboard to work alongside them in the development and fulfillment of the renovation of the existing school buildings.

What to do with your rowhouse, the quintessential DC home. We at JKA take pride in exploring new ways to tackle the many challenges of a rowhouse coupled with the desires of our Clients. For this U Street Corridor edition, we introduced a modern airy, light-filled addition to the rear of the home. Using large windows at the updated and expanded kitchen we provided a visual and physical connection to the deck and patio. The floors above, a bedroom and artist’s studio, include balconies overlooking the nearby park. The soaring upturned red roofline is a standout amongst the line of other rowhouses on the block. #dcarchitecture #dcrealestate #dcdevelopemnt #rowhouse #rowhouses #addition #washingtondc #renovation #renovations #dchomes #dc #ustreet #ustreetcorridor

Is it too late to say Happy New Year? Maybe. But it’s not too late to share this exciting new project with you. Together with our friends @ptbloomsred and @wo_develop we’re adding a modern corrugated metal and wood sided structure to a dilapidated quasi-historic apartment house. The design of the addition and renovations will instill a contemporary and energized life into the building providing spacious and bright homes for the future owners.
